Weather Aware
A warm front will lift northeast through north Alabama and southern middle Tennessee on Saturday morning, followed by a weak cool front Saturday evening. These frontal systems will produce numerous to widespread showers and a few thunderstorms. Given the wind shear profile expected, conditions will be marginally favorable for strong to severe thunderstorms.

Common Walking Mistakes that Lower Your Calorie Burn
Mixing up your speed during a workout not only torches calories, it helps burn fat. One study found walkers who varied their pace burned 20% more calories than those who maintained a constant speed. Additional research showed alternating between a moderate-intensity pace and bursts of high intensity was more effective at reducing belly fat.
The fix: To add intervals to your walk, Leslie Sansone, creator of the Walk at Home Workouts and author of “Walk Away the Pounds” suggests starting slow, walking at a warmup pace for two minutes, a brisk pace for the next two minutes and then jogging for 30 seconds, repeating the pattern for 20 minutes. “Your body has to adjust to different speeds, which requires more energy and leads to a bigger calorie burn,” notes Sansone.

Fire Science
Fire Science - Week in Review
First Year students worked on Search/Rescue techniques, as well as restricted openings such as moving through a stud wall. They also worked on raising ladders, and tying knots to equipment in order to be able to hoist equipment.
Second Year students worked on donning Hazardous Materials Ensembles and learned the difference in Level A, B, C, and D hazmat suits. They also learned about decontamination procedures.
Next week, the Alabama Fire College Live Burn Trailer will be at CHS and all Fire Science students will participate in search/rescue, ladders, and live fire extinguishment.
We also still have a few Krispy Kreme BOGO Cards left if anyone wants one - $20 each and that gets you 10 free dozen. Great stocking stuffers or Secret Santa gifts!
Alabama Public Television's Young Heroes of 2019 - Call for Nominations
A student from your school could receive statewide recognition and a scholarship this spring.
Alabama Public Television is accepting nominations for the 2019 Young Heroes of Alabama. Students in grades 9-12 are eligible for the honor. Each of the five Young Heroes selected will receive a scholarship in the amount of $5,000, a tablet computer and other prizes. The selected students and their nominators will also be hosted for an all-expense paid visit to the legislature in Montgomery, as well as a tour of various attractions.
In brief, the Young Heroes are selected on the basis of scholarship, community/school service, and having excelled despite some sort of extreme difficulty or adversity. Such adversity could range from an unstable home environment to physical or mental challenges to personal tragedy.
The cutoff date for nominations is February 8, 2019. For more information about the Young Heroes program or to take a look at past winners, visit http://www.aptv.org/heroes.asp. Please share this information with your colleagues and interested members of the community.
The first step in recognizing a young hero in your school is nominating him or her. The winners are selected by a panel of judges consisting of business, civic and education leaders from throughout the state. If you have questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate to give me a call at 1-800-239-5233, ext. 152.
Family Engagement/Communication
- Parents’ engagement in young children’s learning is associated with improvements in children’s literacy, behavior, and social-emotional well-being (Committee on Supporting the Parents of Young Children et al. 2016).
- Offer learning experiences for families, such as connecting families to online classes and resources, and family nights where guest speakers and families share their insights on topics of interest and need.
- The National Center on Parent, Family, and Community Engagement reminds professionals, “Learning can also deeply influence families’ feelings about themselves, their abilities, and their future goals and actions.”

PTO / School Related Organizations
This is just a reminder of the guidelines for school board employees in regards to school related organizations such as PTO’s. School Board employees cannot be involved with these organizations if they are an outside agency such as the school's PTO.
We have to make sure that these organizations truly operate on their own without employees of the District being involved. Please refrain from conducting any operational procedures, managerial decisions or discussions pertaining to the PTO.
Please let Mr. Brumley know if you have any questions.
Off-Site Counseling Appointments

Alabama Bicentennial Summer Institutes are part of the state’s ongoing bicentennial celebration. “Since our summer institute program began in 2017, we have equipped more than one thousand educators with an array of new ideas and techniques to enhance their students’ understanding of Alabama history,” said Dr. Susan DuBose, bicentennial education coordinator. The programs are facilitated by master teachers and content specialists and focus on topics ranging from early statehood to voting rights to agriculture and industry and beyond. To register and for more information, visit www.alabama200.org/educators or contact Susan DuBose at susan.dubose@archives.alabama.gov or (334) 353-4692.

Next Level of Instruction:
Environmental Scans AND OBSERVATIONS
We only have four full weeks of school before the end of the first semester. Let’s make sure these four weeks are full of learning at high levels. We owe it to our students to engage them for the full semester. Certainly, we have finals and maybe a party of some sort before the end of the semester, but let’s also make sure we work hard until the end.
Our dual enrollment and advanced courses should not be the only courses that are completed to fidelity. Everyone deserves the same learning opportunity. Next Level Learning!!!

Grant/Scholarship Opportunities
The Junior League is offering grants of up to $6,500 to organizations such as ours. The grants are intended to improve the lives of women and children. Applications are due by December 31, 2018. Projects funded by the grant must be implemented between April 2, 2019 and November 1, 2019. Complete information about the grant is available on the Junior League website at https://www.jltheshoals.org/grant-applications/.

November is National Scholarship Month.
National Scholarship Month is the perfect time to remind your students about how they can get free money for college. According to How America Pays for College 2018, scholarships and grants covered 28 percent of college costs, scholarships alone paying 17 percent. More than half of families (57%) surveyed used a scholarship to help pay for college in 2017-18. Let’s make sure your students don’t miss out.
During November, in honor of National Scholarship Month, students who register for Scholarship Search can enter Sallie Mae’s $5,000 Sweepstakes.* Registering for Sallie Mae’s Scholarship search tool, with over 5 million scholarships, is fast, easy, and free – and there’s no essay required!
As the nation’s saving, planning, and paying for college company, we’re committed to helping your students achieve their dreams. If you have questions about Scholarship Search or any of our college planning tools, please let me know.
