The Dewey Decimal System
The Dewey Decimal System is a library organization system for nonfiction books based simply on numbers with decimals. The system was created by Melvil Dewey in 1876 and is still used in today's libraries. Dewey wanted an easier way to find books in the library because the way that book were organized before his system was by popularity, a not very helpful system. There are ten main categories in the system starting from 0-99, 100-199, and so on. The topics in each section are general knowledge, philosophy and psycology, religion, social sciences, languages, science, technology, arts and recreation, literature, and history and geography. Each category is broken down into ten more detailed topics. This system is also helpful because each book in a library has a call number with a number and then one or two decimals that the book can be found using. Part of the call number has the author of the book's last name. For example a book about the english language could have a call number of 421.45 LAN.

How Libraries / Media Centers are Organized
There are three ways that libraries are organized. There is the Dewey Decimal System for nonfictions books. This system uses numbers and decimals to organize books on the shelf. Fiction books are organized in a different way. For fiction books, the letters FIC or F first is written then the first three letters of author's last name is written. For example, FIC LEW or F LEW could be a classification for a book. From there the books are organized in alphabetical order by the last name. Biograhphies also have a different way that they are organized. First the letter B is written then the first three letters of the last name of the person being written about is shown. For example of President Lincoln, B LIN. These books are also categorized in alphabetical order. These are the three main ways libraries organize their books.
