Health Office Updates
With flu season underway, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is urging residents to get their flu shot and get a COVID-19 vaccine or booster for which they are eligible.
Federal public health officials are expecting higher flu activity this season as compared to the previous years. “It’s important that everybody over the age of 6 months get a flu vaccine annually, and even more so this year because the lack of infection over the past couple of flu seasons likely means there is less immunity to flu than in prior years,” said Dr. Larry Madoff, Medical Director of DPH’s Bureau of Infectious Disease and Laboratory Sciences. “The flu vaccine and the COVID-19 vaccine or booster can be given during the same visit. We really urge people to get vaccinated to protect themselves, those around them, and to help prevent the circulation of flu on top of COVID, which could cause a strain on our health care system.”
Flu vaccination is especially important for people who are at higher risk of developing serious flu complications, such as those with a chronic respiratory condition, heart disease, a weakened immune system, or who are pregnant. Because flu and COVID-19 are both expected to be circulating this fall, and may have similar symptoms, people with flu-like illness should get tested for both COVID and flu.
Stay Up to Date with COVID-19 Vaccines Including Boosters
Updated (bivalent) boosters are available. CDC recommends everyone stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines for their age group:
Getting a COVID-19 vaccine after you recover from COVID-19 infection provides added protection against COVID-19.
If you recently had COVID-19, you may consider delaying your next vaccine dose (primary dose or booster) by 3 months from when your symptoms started or, if you had no symptoms, when you first received a positive test. For more information click here
School Counseling
Seniors who are planning to apply to 4-year colleges and universities should be working on their college applications, completing necessary essays and making sure they have connected with teachers about recommendations. Students should make an appointment with their School Counselor if they have not done so already. Deadlines come up quick and we want to make sure they everyone is on track.

Family Mental Health Resources:
October is mental health awareness month, which brings our focus on how to take care of ourselves and our children. While we should be doing the basics all the time (but we know life isn't really like that), a month of awareness gives us the opportunity to make some mental health priorities. These guidelines are important not just for your teenager but for yourself, too.
1. Take care of your body, get enough sleep, eat right and stay active.
2. Connect with others; talk to someone you trust about how you are feeling.
3. Take time to unwind, have some downtime. Some down regulating activities that can recharge include reading a book, yoga, taking a bath, taking a walk.
A great way to unwind the body and mind is to do progressive muscle relaxation exercises. This is when you clench and unclench parts of your body, moving from your feet to your head. I attached a sample exercise to try. See if you can try this a few times a week and see if you feel any better. I suggest to students who can't sleep to try this while laying in bed, and some will say later on in the week that it can work!
Thank you,
Julia Fairclough
