HERMAN E. DUMMER NEWSLETTER
March, 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
MARCH. We are doing exactly what this month is telling us to do. We are “Marching” on! We are teaching and learning. We are growing while facing hardships and successes. We plan and regroup while learning to be patient knowing that our well-made plans will surely need to change…again. That’s ok. We’ve learned to lean on one another knowing full well that we cannot do this alone. There is no Lone Ranger anymore because that ideal just doesn’t work. We are a team, and a very good one I might add! This does not mean we don’t make mistakes because like everyone else, we have made our share, but it does mean we pick ourselves back up, learn from them, and keep marching on with our heads held high, our eyes wide open, and hearts full of passion, forgiveness, and love for what we do and the students we teach. FORWARD MARCH!

6TH GRADE HEALTH REQUIREMENTS FOR 2022-23 SCHOOL YEAR
It’s not too early to start planning for next school year. Below is a list of health requirements for entry into 6th grade. The physical exam and immunization record are due by the first day of school.
· Complete physical exam: Please note that a sports physical does not meet the requirement for the 6th grade physical.
· Up - to - date immunizations to include: Tdap, 2- varicella doses, hepatitis B series, and meningococcal vaccine. Please check with your health care provider to be sure these immunizations are included on your child’s 6th grade physical exam.
* Exemption Forms: Renewal of Religious Exemption Form or Medical Exemption, if applicable.
· Dental exam: due by May 15, 2023
The 6th grade health packets will be sent home, with your child, in the near future. Health forms may also be found on the district website or picked up in the main office. If you have questions about any of these requirements you may contact Mrs. Brummel, School Nurse at 815-786-8498.
NATIONAL POISON PREVENTION WEEK IS MARCH 20-26, 2022
If you suspect a poisoning or if you have questions regarding poisoning, call your Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222. When you call this number, you will reach a Poison Center covering your area. Poison Centers are staffed by specially trained nurses, pharmacists and physicians and are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The call is free and confidential. To learn more about how to help prevent poisonings, visit: poisonhelp.hrsa.gov. Almost 90% of the public who call a local Poison Center get the help they need over the telephone without having to go to a doctor or the hospital.
Poison Prevention Tips:
• Make sure all potential poisons are out of the sight and reach of children
• Keep medicines and household products in their original containers with original labels
• Always read labels before using medicines, cleaners and other products
• Teach children to ask first before eating or drinking anything
• Never call medicine candy or make a game out of taking it
FANTASTIC 4TH GRADE
It’s been another busy month for our 4th graders! We are coming to the end of our 3rd unit in reading. We spent a lot of time reading different texts on natural disasters, and understanding that each text can be used to analyze similar topics and ideas. Students were able to practice their opinion writing skills, and will wrap up the writing portion of the unit with an informational news report on earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis. Students will use their knowledge to explain the impact these natural disasters have on people and land. With the approach of the state IAR assessments in April, classes will continue to read independently, practice responses to text, and compare/contrast articles or stories.
Our big fraction unit has ended in math! We can now find equivalent fractions, add/subtract fractions and mixed numbers, and multiply fractions. Currently we are learning about line plots and will soon begin to work on decimals!
In social studies, fourth graders shared what they learned about Illinois in a slideshow presentation to the class! Each classroom will soon be starting the last unit in science. Ask your child what they are learning next: Energy; Soils, Rocks, and Landforms; or Environments! Our embryology unit kicked off with the arrival of chicken eggs in each classroom. We will work together to care for the eggs, learn about the chicken life cycle, and see the eggs hatch. We are so lucky to have this hands-on activity to extend our learning!
FABULOUS 5TH GRADE
Fifth grade has just finished up their unit on fractions, and will be learning about how to measure volume. I think many will be relieved to take a break from fractions!
Our reading and writing has been focusing on Science Fiction lately. We recently read “George’s Secret Key to the Universe” written by Stephen and Lucy Hawkin. It was a fun introduction to space exploration and the mysteries of the universe. We were able to discuss how the earth’s orbit is responsible for the different seasons, locating different constellations based on the seasons, and also how to tell time simply using a shadow. The most interesting work was having students write their own science fiction story.
We hope the fifth graders share their stories with you at home! Thanks for your continued support in their education!
BAND & MUSIC NEWS
During the month of February, both fourth and fifth grade students have continued learning about the guitar. The school has over 30 guitars which students have used to play melodies and chords. Songs such as “We Don’t Talk about Bruno” and “Surface Pressure” used single notes to form a riff that goes along with the original song.
Fifth grade band is now rehearsing as a full group on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is in addition to lesson times with small groups. We currently have 11 flutes, 2 oboes, 9 clarinets, 11 saxophones, 7 trumpets, 1 french horn, 4 trombones, and 11 percussionists. Fifth grade’s first band performance will be on Tuesday, March 1st at 7pm in the middle school gym.
