Computer Science Education Week/Hour of Code
Computer Science Education Week is December 7-13, 2020. Some of you may know it as "The Hour of Code." CSEDWeek recognizes Admiral Grace Murray Hopper, known as the pioneer of computing, and whose birthday is December 9, 1906.
Computer use and basic coding are quickly becoming 21st-century skills. Why not commit to coding for one hour this week. According to Hadi Partovi, the originator of the "Hour of Code," "Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic, and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path."
At Brookwood, we want this to be a family event. If you are a computer programmer or have a career in computer science, we need your help. We would like you to bring us to work with you. If you could make us a short video describing your job, we would appreciate it. Specific details are linked below.
Also, we want to encourage families to explore The Hour of Code activities together. During Computer Science Education Week, an email will be sent with activities for the whole family. I wonder how many lines of code you will write?
Click here to learn more about submitting a short video describing your job in computer science.
Look for more information to follow during Computer Science Education Week.
PTO Fundraiser
The PTO has been in discussion with the school on PTO memberships, events, and school needs. The budgets for our schools were cut but needs are still there and we are fundraising through the month of November in our Giving Campaign. Our goal is $40,000 and as of November 9 we've raised just a little over $2,000 so we have a LONG WAY TO GO!!!
We are asking families to support the school via donations of whatever your family can afford to give. Please make donations via PayPal or check.
- PayPal donations can be made to BrookwoodPTOTreasurer@gmail.com
- Checks can be made to Brookwood PTO
Please remember that all donations are tax-deductible and many employers will match your donation. Please consider donating today! The school has several needs for both children in school and those that are virtual. These needs include:
- Purchasing new Chromebooks for those that are outdated or have been damaged
- Website subscriptions like Education Galaxy, Teacher Innovations, Learning A-Z, and Read Naturally
- Replacing water fountains (that are shut off) with water filling stations
- Providing each teacher with a classroom supply for first aid and recess equipment
- Hurricane Zeta coming through replacing a shelter that provided shade by the playground for children
- Grants for music, art, science lab, and computer lab
Holiday Shop
We will be doing a virtual holiday shop this year. Parents can go online and shop for items and pay for them online. We are using the same vendor that comes to do the physical store in our schools normally. There will be a $10 minimum per order (set by Reindeer Lane). The items will be delivered directly to your child's classroom before the winter holiday break. A pick-up time will be scheduled for all virtual orders. Please be on the lookout for the link once this goes live.
