Welcome Back: 2018-2019 School Year

Dear Roderick Families,

I hope that you have had a fantastic summer vacation spent with friends and family. I know the last two months have flown by and we are excited to start the 2018-2019 school year.

Along with getting to know the Wrentham community and preparing for the upcoming school year, I’ve been fortunate enough to spend some downtime this summer with family and friends. My wife, Kendal; eleven month old daughter, Josephine; and basset hound, Bernadette, have spent many fun weekends on Cape Cod at the beach in Harwichport.

As we begin the 2018-2019 school year, I have two important goals that I would like to focus on this year. First, is to simply get to know you and listen to your thoughts and ideas about how to collectively improve as a community. The ability to build relationships and trust is the most important aspect of my job and I hope to do that over the 2018-2019 school year. Secondly, I want to be as visible as possible in classrooms, common areas, and after school events at Roderick. In the coming months, I am eager to listen to your ideas and suggestions to improve the learning experiences for all Roderick students and families.

Roderick Elementary is a very special place with many wonderful staff, committed parents, and well rounded students who make Wrentham an exceptional place to learn and work. I'm excited to continue a culture of respect, continuous growth, and collaboration among all members of the Roderick community. Once again, thank you and I look forward to a great 2018-2019 school year!

Sincerely,

Mr. Martes

Bus routes will take longer than usual on the first few weeks of school. Please allow for extra time getting to the bus stop in the morning and afternoon.

Please direct any bus plan requests to the office staff, Mrs. Chambers. The request will be forwarded to the district bus coordinator and you will be notified by email to confirm a change. chambersl@wrenthamschools.org

Facility Improvements at Roderick

The Roderick Library went through a major upgrade this summer with new paint and a brand new glass wall added to make space for a technology center. As we start the 2018-2019 school year, Mrs. Fox will have new furniture which allows for flexible seating for students working on laptops in the technology center. The technology center also added an additional green screen for student video projects. The Roderick library was rearranged and updated with a large interactive monitor for teaching and presentations. Thank you to Mrs. Lopez and Mrs. Fox for their hard work in organizing all of the library books this August after the construction project.

Grade 6: Camp Bournedale

All Grade 6 students will be coming home the first day of school with a registration form for Camp Bournedale, a health form, a suggested packing list, a sample schedule for a day at camp. All students will take Marine Biology, Adventure, Rocketry, and Lobster Tales. In addition, students will take 4 of the following 5 classes: Canal, Coastal Ecology, Pond Study, E.T. Lab, and Geocaching. Please be on the lookout for more information on chaperones and health restrictions.

Responsive Classroom

All staff in the Wrentham Public Schools will be participating in Responsive Classroom training on Tuesday, September 4th. There have been many teachers at Roderick who already have implemented Responsive Classroom routines to their school day. Responsive Classroom is a great set of teaching strategies that builds positive community and behavioral management into the culture of the school day. Please read more on Responsive Classroom at www.responsiveclassroom.org for articles about home connections and positive language.

Picture Day

Picture day at the Roderick School will occur on Thursday, September 27th. Picture forms will go home the day before picture day and need to be returned on Thursday, September 27th.

Remember!

There will be no school on Friday, August 31st for the Labor Day weekend and Tuesday, September 4th for staff professional development. We hope you have a fantastic Labor Day spent with friends and family!

King Phillip High School Band

The King Phillip Regional High School Band will come to Roderick on Tuesday, September 11th. We look forward to seeing the many wonderful performers play their instruments and get our students excited about joining the band at Roderick this school year!
