Record that Reading!
EACH night the students should be recording their reading time on the October calendar page in their agendas. They know where this page is and should be able to record it themselves. An adult just needs to initial it each night :).
- Please send a snack with your child each day. Please do not send any drinks other than water- juices are sticky when they spill! Thank you! (remember that we are peanut and treenut free)
- Please check and sign your child's planner every night.
Math Updates
In Math this week, we began Unit 3! On Monday, we reviewed "What's My Rule?" by find missing numbers and rules in the table. They had to apply a multiplication rule to complete the table and then describe the pattern to solve the problems.
Tuesday and Wednesday we worked on Estimating Costs. They had to make estimates for problems they solve by using mental math. Then they had to examine others' explanations using a rubric as a guide, and then revise their work.
On Thursday, we used partial-sums addition to add 2- and 3- digit numbers. We reviewed estimation and our addition strategies.
Friday, we practiced traditional addition. They used both partial sums addition and traditional addition.
Building a READING LIFE
In Reading this week, we continued to dive into our Mystery Unit! We discussed and shared all we know about solving mysteries and how to read them! We learned that readers of mysteries not only ask themselves "What's the mystery here?" and they also ask "Who is the crime solver?" but also pay attention to clues.
Then we learned that the only way mystery readers can predict or think forward to figure out who did the crime, is to think backward. Mystery readers think back about each character to consider if her or she might be a suspect.
Finally, we learned that when mystery readers come to tricky parts of books or start new books that feel tricky, they take action and use strategies to deal with the problem.
Word Study
Regular Word Study this week! :)
This is the schedule for next week:
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This should be completed in the word study notebook in their binder.
The notebook will then be returned to school Friday morning and handed in to me :).
Friday- there will be a test given
This means that before the notebooks are handed in on Fridays there will be...
1. an answer key made of the sort and discovery in class during sort introductions
2. Monday night homework practiced/written sort and discovery.
3. a blind sort and written discovery on Thursday night.
Writing Long & Strong
This week in Writing, we finished publishing our narrative stories and then used the app Book Creator to publish our stories in a digital book.
Special Areas
In Gym, students have been working on cooperation and leadership skills the past several weeks and preparing for physical fitness testing. This will occur over the next 4 weeks.
In Music, students are learning to distinguish between steady beat and rhythm in music class. Students are performing the steady beat and rhythms using body percussion as well as instruments.
In Library, the students are working on being an author (elements of suspense), cliff hangers, descriptive language, onomatopoeia, jump scares, foreshadowing, appropriate settings, plot twists. Once we have read and discussed how the author used these elements in their stories, students will take part in candlelight reading.
In Art, Students are studying the American Artist Elizabeth Murray and working on creating a collage painting based on the her work.

Simple Machines
In Science this week, we continued to work simple machines.
We started the week learning that pulleys reduce the amount of force required to lift a load. We learned that a pulley contains a wheel with an axle through the middle of it. A pulley wheel rotates freely around its fixed axle. We learned that a pulley is different from a wheel and axle because wheels and axles are attached and they turn together. A pulley wheel spins around its axle.
We ended the week by taking a mini-assessment of the content learned thus far.
Halloween

When planning your child’s costume for school, remember that NO weapons (real or fake) are permitted in school. Also consider a costume that your child can bring to school on the bus and one that is easy to put on and take off. Children will not be permitted to wear costumes to school. Since we want to provide a safe and fun experience for everyone, costumes which reflect violence, excessive gore, or “look alike” weapons will not be permitted. For safety reasons, roller blades, skateboards, “heelies,” or costumes that may cause a student to trip or fall may not be worn. Masks are also not permitted.
The parade for PM Kindergarten – 6th Grade will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31, around the outside of the school - weather permitting. When the parade is over, the children return to their classrooms for their parties. Our AM Kindergarten will be having a Halloween Fashion Show at 10:00 a.m. in the cafeteria. Note: If you choose for your child not to participate in the festivities, alternate activities will be taking place in the library.
We ask that preschool age children not attend the parties. As per the OJR Elementary Student/Parent Handbook, each classroom is limited to five parent helpers. Parents helping in the classroom have been pre-registered and are to report to the school lobby for a visitor badge. There is no need to register with the office if you are just watching the parade. Parents are required to leave the campus by 2:45 pm to make way for the busses.
THANK YOU!
Have a wonderful weekend and thank you for all you do!
