Student of the Week = Travis Craig
Also Nominated:
Brock Brown
From the time in walks in at ACE until I see him again during class, this kid is just AWESOME. He has such a pleasant even-tempered demeanor about himself that is contagious. I listen to the way that he greets adults, the way that he interacts with his peers, and the way that he responds to his day, it makes my heart happy. What a blessing Brock is to have here on campus and, oh, what a smile!

Addilyn Taylor has been so very helpful this week. She helps Mrs. Price with anything she needs, and always enjoys helping her friends, and classmates too! Addilyn is a great joy to have at SAISD!! Way to go Addilyn!

Theatre Arts
Santa Anna Students Attend the Texas Thespian Festival
On November 12, eleven Santa Anna students traveled to the Texas State Thespians Festival in San Antonio, Texas. There, they spent four days learning, competing, and engaging in the theater arts. The festival was the 50th year anniversary for the National Thespian Society, a nationwide organization dedicated to theater and fine arts. Led by drama teacher Alyssa Graves, the troupe competed in events, participated in workshops, and watched high quality performances.
“My favorite part was definitely watching Puffs,” says Kylee Boatright when asked about the trip. Puffs was one of the nightly performances of the festival, a story about a young American boy named Wayne who discovers he is a wizard and attends a British school alongside another well-known magical orphan.
The troupe gained more than enjoyment from the trip. “Competing at the Thespians showed me that I have a lot of improvements to make in order to be better,” says Audrey Lira, who performed two monologue selections for judges at the festival. “I do my best work when I’m in front of people. And I feel like everyone in there was good, and helped me see ways that I can improve even more,” says Lori Cowley, who also competed in the monologue category. Bruce Brown and Beckett Guthrie advanced to nationals with their performance of an excerpt from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. They will be competing once again in June at the International Thespian Society National Festival in Bloomington, Indiana. Beckett Guthrie also advanced to nationals in Playwrighting. His play, Heart of Oak will be performed on December 11 by the Junior/Senior Theater Arts class.
“Try something new, you never known where you can find success,” says Beckett on the topic of his play’s advancement.
The Thespian Troupe is an extension of the growing theater department in Santa Anna, a cause Alyssa Graves fully supports. “Life is a stage, and theater teaches you how to act and communicate through it,” says the teacher. Mrs. Graves looks forward to future trips and experiences, a notion shared by her students.
