First Day of School

We are looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow for the first day of school. If you missed Maze Day you can come and pick up your schedule tomorrow morning. We will be in the library as early as 7:30 am. You can also drop off any paperwork you have. School starts at 8:25 am. Our 8th grade WEB Leaders will be in bright green shirts to help any students who are lost or need help. Staff will also be in the hallways and main areas of campus to assist. The office will also be open starting at 7:30 am. Our new office hours for this year are 7:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Construction Update

Our new parking lot and drop off located at the corner of Connecticut and Goodwin will open tomorrow morning for the first time. For drop offs and pick ups, please use the right lane. The left lane is for through traffic and to enter/exit the parking spots. Towards the end of the parking lot there is a right and left turn lane to turn onto Connecticut.

Students can enter campus campus through the hallway towards the end of the parking lot by Rocketship. (Pictures below). There will be a new gate put in this week in that hallway so that during the day it can remain closed/locked, but the students can get out (it will have a push bar from the inside). For right now we will continue to use the 300 wing entrance (by the music room/portables) as the other entrance and exit.

Parents may also drop off/pick up students on Washington, Maddux, and Goodwin. We will continue to utilize white curb areas on Goodwin for school buses so we don't clog the new parking lot. Please be patient as people get used to the new parking lot and traffic patterns on all sides of the school. Police and volunteers will be out assisting. Admin and staff will be out helping as well. (The first morning Mr. Camarena, one of our new Assistant Principals, will be out in front, as Mrs. Leonardo and myself have to help with schedules in the library).

Buses From Selby Lane, Fair Oaks, and Taft

For those taking the bus to and from Selby Lane, the pick up at Selby is East Selby Lane and Markham Avenue. At Kennedy they will get on the bus in the white area on Goodwin Avenue. Monday-Friday the pick up time at Selby Lane is 7:30 am. They will be dropped off at Selby all days except Thursday at 3:30 pm. On Thursdays they will be dropped off at 2:00 pm. Here are some pictures for the Selby drop off/pick up since this is new.
For those at Fair Oaks, the morning pick up time is at 7:15 am. The morning pick up for Taft is 7:20 am. In the afternoons students will return to Fair Oaks around 3:40 and Taft around 3:45 pm, all days except for Thursdays. On Thursdays they will return around 2:05 and 2:10 pm.

I was told that those of you who have signed up for transportation have been notified about pick up and drop off times and details at Selby, Fair Oaks, and Taft.

Class/Schedule Changes

Unless students are missing classes/have an error in their schedule, we will not be making schedule changes until later this week and next week. On Wednesday and Thursday students can fill out a request to change their elective. Space is very limited in electives, so most changes will not happen. We will not change students’ classes so they can be with their friends.

6th Grade Potluck

The 6th Grade Potluck is this Thursday, August 22, from 6-7 pm in the B-Quad. Bring a dish for six. Families with the last name beginning with:

A-F: Bring a salad or side dish

G-R: Bring a main dish

S-Z: Bring dessert

For more information, please contact Liz Calderon-Garcia at (650) 482-2110 or ecalderongarcia@rcsdk8.net

The Yosemite Information Night will follow in the gym from 7-8 pm.

Thank You!

There are many people and groups I would like to recognize for their efforts this past week. Thank you!

  • Peninsula Sunrise Rotary Club - Donated a box to each teacher with some supplies. (Pictures below).
  • All of the parents, teachers, and Kennedy partners who bared the heat and volunteered at Maze Day. (Good job to families, as well).
  • All of our 8th grade WEB Leaders. They went through two days of training on August 8 & 9, worked with our 6th graders on Tuesday, August 13, for WEB Orientation, and worked with our new 7th/8th grade students on Friday, August 16.
  • Dennis McBride, who picked up the pizzas for WEB Orientation lunch. (We were super busy transiting the gym from WEB activities to Maze Day in a short period of time, so this was super helpful).
  • Redwood Baptist Church whose members donated breakfast for staff on Wednesday morning.
  • Lupe Flores-Robles, who picked up and setup lunch for the teachers on Thursday. Thank you, PTO!
  • Roy Dorling, who helped organize and deliver breakfast and lunch for staff on behalf of PTO, and has been picking up cases of water and granola bars so we have new emergency food/water. He has been delivering them to all 42 classrooms.
  • All of our staff who have been working hard this past week (and many this summer) to be ready for school.

WEB Lunch This Friday

6th graders will have the opportunity to eat lunch with their WEB Leaders and other students this Friday at lunch in the B-Quad. For those who didn't make it to WEB Orientation, teachers will have lists of which groups the students are in and can help them find their group. Students will be dismissed a few minutes early to get lunch (if they get lunch from the cafeteria) and return to the B-Quad. We will have a special treat to enjoy.

PowerSchool Portal

Some of you have asked when you will receive your PowerSchool portal login information (where you can check grades, etc). This will occur after Labor Day, hopefully that Tuesday, September 3. Often there is a lot of movement the first ten days of school between schools in our district, so we would like to wait until everyone is a bit more settled to generate all of the letters with the login information.

Back To School Packet

If for some reason you never received the Kennedy back to school packet of information, I have scanned and attached them below.

PowerSchool Back To School Information Update

You should have received an email on Thursday, August 1, to update your student’s information in PowerSchool. (The District is no longer using SchoolMint). It is really important that you fill this out completely so that we can contact you and also have emergency contacts should we need them. Each student has their own unique code that must be used to update this. Many of you have still not fully updated this information. If you need help, you can come to the office this week.

Donations

If you are able to donate some supplies to Kennedy, that is always helpful. We get a limited supply budget and almost half of that budget goes straight towards copier expenses. Items that are helpful:

  • Boxes of Tissues

  • Hand Sanitizer

  • Disinfecting Wipes

  • Cases/packs of bottled water (we use these for dances, student activities, events. They are hard to get reimbursed, as we can’t use any District money allotted to the school to pay for these).

  • Colored Pencils

  • Markers

  • Reams of white paper and colored paper

  • Scissors (adult and student-sized)

  • Note Cards (3x5 and 4x6)

  • Highlighters

  • #2 pencils

Box Tops

Many products that you buy have “box tops.” Box tops can be turned into Kennedy and then we receive $.10 for each box top. This money goes towards supplies and student activities. If you have some, you are welcome to bring them to Maze Day or turn them into the office any time it is open this year. Students will also compete every other week to see which fourth period class brings in the most box tops to earn a prize. We can’t accept expired box tops unless they are from 2019.

Amazon Smile

A reminder that you can give back to Kennedy at no extra cost by using Amazon Smile when you purchase items on Amazon. Here is a link for more information: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/chpf/about/ref=smi_se_rspo_laas_aas
