Pine Class News
Update: Week of 10/20
News and Request
Thanks for reading out newsletters. Sorry that this one is late. The kids are always so excited to help us write the newsletter to parents. You can read it below.
Also, it's come to our attention that some kindergarten parents are helping to clean the classrooms after school. Though we have a fantastic janitor, and very helpful kids, it's just a reality that early childhood classrooms can be messy and, well, "germy." We would love some help from parents to wipe down and disinfect parts of the classroom a once a week so we can keep everybody healthy, cold-free and in school as much as possible. In one class, the whole cleaning crew is coordinated by one parent. Please email Paul or Anna directly if you are available to help.
All the best,
Paul and Anna
Newsletter - Shared Writing
We did a lot of math this week. We counted pencils and cubes and crayons. We counted by groups of tens. For example, 37 pattern blocks fit in three bags of ten with seven left over.
Every day at the playground we play with the equipment.
In Kirsten's sustainability class, we planted seeds for wheat grass. Sustainability is fun!
In math class, we played collect 10 with two numbers. For example, 5 + 5 = 10. 6 + 4 is also 10.
With Anna we made sunflowers using different materials.
Love,
The Pine Class

Instructional Tip
Here we share an instructional tip so you can support at home what's learned in school:
One foundational skill for young readers is called segmenting. Segmenting is the ability down a word into each of it's sounds. Many young readers attach an /uh/ sound to the end of some consonants. This can cause problems in reading unfamiliar words.
Ask your kid to say the sounds of a word one at a time.
You say "race."
Your kid should say /rrr/ /aaa/ /sss/.
Listen carefully. If your child says /ruh/ instead of /rrrr/, the you should model how to say the /r/ sound by itself.
