Hatchet Happenings
November 2023
3rd Annual Christmas Light Show!
The light show, which lasts approximately one hour, is designed, built, and coded by Washington High School students in Mr. Johnston’s Construction classes and Mr. Riney’s AP Computer Science and Cybersecurity classes. The light display is located on the north side of the Hatchet House opposite the city pool.
The show will run every night from 6:00-10:00 until classes resume on January 3, 2024. The show will be broadcast on FM station 90.7.
A special thank you goes out to Washington Light and Power, Davis Electric, and Sodexo for helping to set up the light display!
Supporting Latino Families for Success
Juntos 4-H, an after-school program through Purdue Extension and funded by the United Way of Daviess County, helps Latino families at Washington Jr. High bridge the gap between high school and post-secondary education.
School staff and other community leaders greeted families and introduced themselves, as one of the goals of the program is to get families familiar with school staff and community members. Other goals were family-oriented, such as trying to have dinner together as a family as often as possible and reducing screen time.
Program Director Luis Santiago, Purdue Extension-Daviess County, feels very passionate about this program. “I want to see not only the kids but I want to see the parents succeed. We want students to feel a sense of pride and belonging so that one day they can come back to teach kids and help our community.”
Things that “Light Up Our Lives!”
4th graders at Washington Veale Elementary used their newly learned knowledge of circuits to create an interactive bulletin board for the whole school to enjoy!
Giving Back at Washington Upper Elementary
Students at Upper Elementary have been collecting donations for Generations Network over the past few weeks. Students in Ms. Butcher’s class put these baskets together for them to be shared with homebound residents in our community as a part of our Kids at Hope Community and Service Destination.
Dual Language Immersion Program Family Night!
This fall, Washington Community Schools launched a Dual Language Immersion program at Washington Primary. Dual immersion education integrates and equal number of native English speaking and native Spanish speaking students in the same classroom.
At Family Night, students were able to show their parents what they are learning in class. Families participated in activities to learn more about different cultures. Mrs. Quinteros and her husband shared a special dance that is traditionally performed at the Inti Raymi festival in her home country of Ecuador.
3rd Grade Thanksgiving Day Parade at Washington Intermediate
The 3rd-grade classes at Washington Intermediate have been learning about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. They made their own balloons and held a parade of their own!
