Fall Fetival Volunteers 2019
Adult Volunteers Needed!
- We need YOUR help! The OSS PVO is asking the OSS parents to sign up to volunteer and help at the Fall Festival on Friday, November 1st and Saturday AND/OR November 2nd. On Friday we need help during the day with receiving bake sale items at morning drop off, festival prep and starting at 6:00 pm with building one set up. On Saturday there will be donuts and coffee at 7am and you will receive a volunteer lunch voucher when you check in for your shift. Saturday has two shifts available plus early morning set up. If you are working the 2nd shift, come early to eat before your shift starts, the volunteer lunch room will close at 2:00pm. There is a ½- hour overlap to make sure that the post is not left vacant if the second shift is running late. We would appreciate any additional help for early set up at 7:00 am.
- Elementary OSS Parents, we also need coverage for the inflatables and have 4 (1.5 hour) shifts for each grade level. Please consider helping supervising one of those shifts so we can keep the inflatables open all day. These shifts have been added to the Elementary School Adult Volunteer sign up page.
- Also please consider donating to our Bake Sale. We are accepting home baked or store bought desserts to compliment our lunch menu. OCPS rules are listed on the sign up page and non perishable donations can be dropped off the Friday morning before.
All the three sign ups can be found on the same Sign Up page. Click on the tab at the top of the page that corresponds with your campus and please sign up for multiple times. The PVO appreciates your support.
Science Fair 2019-2020
Character Day 2019
Orlando Science Schools Lynx Campus celebrated Character Day on October 4 – 5. Character Day is an annual event that unites millions of people in schools, companies, and homes to develop and deepen their character: strengths like empathy, grit, gratitude, and leadership. Why? Because character development leads not only to school and career success, but also to stronger, more engaged individuals and a more just world. Last year, over 4 million people across 200,000 groups in 125 countries and all 50 states participated in Character Day.
OSS students were able to Dress Down on October 4th, in OSS colors: blue and white. Additionally, students learned about the science of character, and how they can develop their character strengths. On October 5th students were encouraged to unplug from technology, to reconnect with each other and nature, to go back to a time before smartphones, and focus on cultivating their character.
Club Corner
Fashion Club
We want to send out a special “OSS Thank You!” to our new student Ryan A. and his mother Denise! Not only is their presence a wonderful new addition to our OSS family, but they also have gone out of their way to give back to our school’s community. After reading our newsletter last Friday, they addressed our Fashion Club’s need for sewing machines by donating two machines to the club! Thank you so much for your generous donation, we look forward to using these items to further our creativity!

What is a Multi-Tiered System of Supports?
MTSS is a term used to describe an evidence-based model of schooling that uses data-based problem-solving to integrate academic and behavioral instruction and intervention. The integrated instruction and intervention is provided to students at varying levels of intensity based on student need. The goal is to prevent problems and intervene early so that students can be successful. Please reach out school staffing specialists if you have any questions.
30/30 DISMISSAL RULE
What is Delayed Dismissal? 30/30 Rule?
The “30/30 Rule" is a Delayed Dismissal Weather procedure that is nationally recognized. It is required that the “30/30 Rule” be enacted by the school if thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a lightning strike. Orlando Science Middle/High follows this rule.
When 30/30 Rule is implemented, students will not be dismissed until 30 minutes has passed from the last sound of thunder. However, parents/guardians who wish to pick up their child/children during delayed dismissal, will be allowed to sign out their child/children at the cafeteria or front office.
In order to pick up your student(s) from the cafeteria or front office during this procedure, parents/guardians must bring their dismissal sign to the front door of the school to sign their child/children out. If you do not have a dismissal sign, you will need to provide a picture ID and be on the school pick-up list to pick-up the child/children. Bus riders will be delivered home when conditions are all safe for dismissal.
An automated telephone and/or email message will be used to notify parents/guardians about delayed dismissals. Always be sure to update the school when your phone or email information changes. Thank you for your cooperation on our students’ safety.

New Orange County Text 911 Service
Citizens and visitors in Orange County can now send a text message to 911 during an emergency or life-threatening situation. When seconds matter, a voice call to 911 is still the best and fastest way for a 911 call taker to retrieve and deliver life-saving information in the event of an emergency. However, there are certain circumstances where a text to 911 may be a better option. These include:
- You are hearing impaired
- You are speech impaired
- Making a voice call places you in a dangerous situation
- You have tried to call 911 but cannot get phone reception
If you choose to send a text message to 911, please remember the following:
- Always provide your exact location and the nature of your emergency
- Remember to silence your phone if you are in a dangerous situation
- Avoid using slang, social media jargon, and abbreviations
- Do not send photos, emojis, or videos
- Do not send a group text
