6th Grade News

ELA: The students will be reading "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry. They will obtain background knowledge about the holocaust and continue building on that information in social studies. In writing class, they will begin a persuasive essay with research about energy sources obtained through science class.

MATH: In math, we will begin our unit over multiple representations. In this unit, we will learn how to display information/answer in a chart, equation and/or in a graph. Then we will start our unit over triangles. This unit will teach the students to classify triangles by their angle measurements and side lengths.

SCIENCE: We will be wrapping up our debate on energy sources during the middle of the week and test at the beginning of next week. The next unit we will cover will be potential and kinetic energy.

SOCIAL STUDIES: For the next three weeks, we will be finishing up our unit on Europe and Russia. We will also be studying imports and exports and their effects on a countries economy.

7th Grade News

ELA: In reading, we are diving into persuasive text and analyzing the author's purpose, central argument, counterargument, and rhetorical fallacies. We will then move into our literary nonfiction unit, where we will look at diary entries, biographies, memoirs, etc. In writing, we are working towards producing an expository essay and learning two strategies (R.E.A.D. and R.O.C.K.) that will help the students analyze revising and editing questions on the Writing STAAR test.

MATH: In math, we are completing the data unit. In this unit, we have to know how to find the mean, median, mode and range from data and different graphs. Students will also have to know how to find peaks, gaps, outliers, spreads, quartiles and interquartiles of different graphs. The next unit is equations and inequalities. Students will model, solve and write one variable two step equations and inequalities and also be able to represent solutions on number lines.

In honors math, we are completing the lines, angles, transversals and triangle unit. In this unit, we will learn how to measure angles, triangles and lines. The students will gain insight that angles, triangles and lines have 180 degrees in them and a right triangle has 90 degrees. Students will need to know different types of angles in order to determine the degrees of an angle and find the value of x. The next unit is Pythagorean Theorem. In the unit, students will use Pythagorean Theorem to find the missing side of right triangles.

SCIENCE: In science, we are studying the forces of everyday life, catastrophic events, and changes to Texas land.

SOCIAL STUDIES: In Texas History, we are concluding our studies over the Mexican National Era and moving into the unrest and revolt in Texas unit. As we progress through our units, we will continue to work in our interactive notebook.

8th Grade News

ELA: In reading, we will be working on Literary Non-Fiction and starting our new class novel "Milkweed." In ELA, we will be working on thesis statements, types of introduction for expository writing.

MATH: Students will finish up Pythagorean Theorem and will begin volume and surface area of 3-D figures. Students can begin bringing in different 3-D figures from home (examples: empty soup cans, small boxes, etc.).

SCIENCE: In science, we are studying components of the universe and the sun. Our next unit will cover the electromagnetic spectrum.

SOCIAL STUDIES: The students are studying western expansion, manifest destiny and the Polk administration. After completion of this unit, we will begin our studies in Industrialization.
