Notes from Ms. Raeburn (The 10)
Kindness RULES!
In February, my notes section will focus on the work we are doing at BCMS to promote Kindness!
Social Emotional Learning is the key to success in life. Even though those skills are not tested or assessed on state tests, they are tested in real life. How we treat each other, how we talk to each other, how we help each other are all testaments to our character. At Bryan County Middle School, we strive to live our PBIS motto of : Be Respectful, Courteous, Manage your Behavior, and Strive for Excellence. Those types of skills are often referred to as "soft skills" but they truly are the skills that will make all of our scholars successful in life.
I am proud to begin a new tradition at BCMS with our first ever #KindnessWeek. This week in particular, we are focused not only on academic success in our classrooms, but we are also focused on the social/emotional success of being good human beings. I sincerely hope that you will join our efforts as we work to model and cultivate great qualities in our middle level learners that will carry them on throughout life.
The calendar changes mid week to March this week and that will mean a new topic for this section of the newsletter. In March and April, I will be focusing on GMAS and other testing that we do at the middle school. This will include helping you to understand what all the data REALLY means as well as making sure your child understands it as well.
This is always a very busy and very fast time of the year!
Other notes:
If you are interested in learning more about how to support your child with GMAS, you can check out this link here:
Click on the grade of your child and look through the resources available. Our teachers will be using some of these exact same resources to begin prep for our testing season.
#ProjectLevelUp -- our focus on GMAS prep, will begin in all WIN classrooms on March 7th!
We would love to begin collecting snack donations for GMAS time! If you are willing and able to donate any of the following for your child's grade level team, please send it in to the main office labeled. Thank you.
Donations needed:
- Fruit Snacks
- Snack Crackers (Individually Wrapped)
- Granola Bars (any kind)
- Mini Waters
- Hard Candy (Jolly Ranchers, Mints, Cinnamons, Etc)
- Gum
We will have a celebration for all scholars who earned Proficient and Distinguished on last year's GMAS and we will have a whole school kick off on Friday April 27th.
GMAS this year is scheduled to begin Monday April 30th and run through May 11th.
We are very fortunate at BCMS to be almost 1:1 which allows us to test all our scholars in the morning!
We were able to do a full school RI (Reading Inventory) last week. Ask your child what their “number” is. The Lexile Stretch Band of where we need scholars to be is 997 for 6th grade, 1049 for 7th grade, and 1097 for 8th grade. A Lexile score measures a scholar's reading ability level. We will test again before GMAS and we will set goals for all scholars! If you would like a copy of this report, please contact us and we will send one home with your child.
TRIBE Shop is still open! See Ms. Shelby for GEAR and of course, we are always collecting box tops!
Thank you for being proactive and for supporting our school and our passion work! I am proud to be your principal and would love to hear from you! Please know that if you have a concern or if you hear something that doesn't feel right, contact me! eraeburn@bryan.k12.ga.us or 912-626-5050 or 912.255.0630 (Cell).
The Pageant is back! April 21st!
