Principal's Corner
This book encourages kids to follow their passions and not let hard work and challenges deter them from achieving their best. We all want our students to develop perseverance and not shy away from challenges. To do this, we have to instill in our children the right mindset about hard work.
The theme of this book goes hand in hand with the work of Stanford Professor Carol Dweck Ph.D. She wrote a book called Mindset. In it, she described how children can have either a Fixed or Growth mindset. She contends that intelligence is like a muscle that can be strengthened with hard work and the right attitude. When children have a growth mindset they feel empowered to challenge themselves and grow. I encourage you to look more into the research of Dr. Dweck and how to foster a growth mindset in your kids.

Superintendent's Message
In January, State Superintendent Tom Torlakson issued a challenge to California schools to show kindness to one another, and participate in what’s called the Great Kindness Challenge. Students, teachers and staff spent a week (or more) spreading kindness in a multitude of ways, expressing appreciation for each other and their schools. This was an amazing opportunity to empower everyone in Union School District and promote a school culture of respect, compassion and unity.
Classrooms were filled with evidence of Kindness Challenge activities, with students displaying notes and drawings of so many random acts of kindness they researched and performed. Students at one site held a parade in honor of their custodians, and students and teachers alike showed their appreciation to office staff members. A class adapted a card game into a kindness game, showing kindness “missions” they could achieve. District office personnel stopped by the schools for a “Recess Take-Over,” helping teachers with yard duty during recess and breaks. We heard so many students say they were excited to continue beyond the one week, and seeing students and teachers take on this challenge and communicating kindness in different ways has been eye-opening, reinforcing the values we hold dear at Union.
With Valentine’s Day approaching, I challenge all of our students, teachers, staff and community members to continue the wonderful commitment started during the Kindness Challenge in January. Showing each other appreciation with even the smallest acts truly strengthens communities, schools, and relationships with people.

Walkathon 2017: We NEED you!
Unfortunately, we currently do not have the volunteers needed to put on this event. We are concerned we will not be able to raise funds to continue providing the same support in the classrooms if we can't put on a Walkathon.
That is why we need some people to step up. Over the years we have tried to make this event as streamlined as possible. We have someone on the Board who is willing to lead and direct volunteers so not everything falls on one person's shoulders.
Please reach out to us if you are available to help. Email volunteer.ghsc@gmail.com if you are able to take on a role.
