2nd Grade News
March 12-16
A Note from Ms. Marshall
Huge thank you to our PTA and our homeroom moms for putting on another great Family Fun Night. It was so great to see all of the kids having so much fun with their families! We are beyond blessed to have a community that cares so much!
Please make sure that you turn in your child's permission slip before we go on Spring Break. Our field trip will be the week we return from Spring Break, and we want every child to go to the OKC Museum of Art with us. If you need another permission slip, please let me know so I can send one home right away. Also, we will have another field trip coming in April to the Jasmine Moran Children's Museum. We will need volunteers for that one as well. If you can join us for both, that is great! If you're only able to attend one of them, we could use more volunteers for the Children's museum in April.
This week is a busy week! Starting Monday is our spring book fair. It will be held in the library all week. We went to the book fair Monday morning for a preview. Your child can bring money the rest of the week to go shopping. The book fair will be open during parent teacher conferences.
All week we will be having ice pop sales as well. Ice pops are 50 cents, or $2 for the whole week. The money will benefit the Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Tuesday night is Sonic Night. If you go to Sonic, please tell them that you are there for Monroe's Sonic Night, and tell them your child is in Ms. MArshall's class. The class with the most participation will win a slush party.
Our second grade spelling bee is Thursday at 10am. If your child is participating in the spelling bee, you are welcome to attend. Please be aware that there will be limited seating. It will be held in Ms. Buckley's music room, near the gym.
Thursday night is our student led portfolio conferences. Please be sure to bring your child with you to the conference, so that they can share with you how they have been doing in class this year. They have their portfolios to share with you, and are excited to share their work with you. Remember that this is a come and go event, and you may come anytime between 5-8pm Thursday evening.

This Week in Class
Math:
We will begin Unit 7 in math this week. The concepts we will cover this week are:
- adding with 3 or more numbers
- measurement with yards
At home, please practice counting change, and getting change back with your child. This is an everyday skill that we are working on in class, and working on it at home, and in the "real world" could be very beneficial. Also, working on telling time with an analog clock, and asking questions like "What time will it be in two hours?" helps reinforce skills taught in class. As always, practice with addition and subtraction fact fluency. A good way to do this is through Xtra Math.
Literacy:
This weeks literacy concepts are:
- Sound of the week: ou, ow
- Story Genre: narrative nonfiction
- Comprehension Skill: point of view
- Comprehension Strategy: summarize
- Grammar: pronouns
- Mechanics: quotation marks showing dialouge
- Writing: letter structure
Please continue to do Smarty Ants at home with your child. The skills your child learns in this program go right with what we learn in class. It really is a great tool, and on top of it, it is fun and engaging.
Science:
We will continue with our States of Matter unit. We have been learning all about solids, liquids, and gases. We are learning about their different properties, and what can change a state of matter. This week we will continue to do other science experiment to see other ways matter can change.

Thank you for all the snacks you kept us stocked up on during the first half of the year. They are greatly appreciated! If you haven't sent in snack for March, please do so when you get a chance. We are running low!
Sandwich bags-Please send sandwich bags. We are running very low. I am perfectly fine with the Great Value brand or any generic sandwich bags.
Clorox wipes - Please send clorox wipes. We really need to sanitize when we have lots of germs going around!
Thank you all so much for being willing to donate materials to our classroom. We could not do all that we do without your support and generosity!! We sure appreciate it!
