Technology
Grade 6: 6th Grade technology students are working with databases using Google Sheets, students have created their own budget for a fictional party and are creating formulas to stay within their given budget. Students are also calculating tax for their purchases and creating formulas that change with each new line item.
Performing Arts
5th Grade Band & Chorus
Concert is Tuesday, January 22 @ 7:00p.m.
5th Grade chorus is off to a great start! We are learning how to make our “Dory” singing voice to get a full and resonant sound! Continue to practice the lyrics at home and look up recordings on youtube!
5th Grade Band has found its groove with our lesson program fully in place. Please remind students to have their musical instruments each band day so that we can take full advantage of our time together. Concepts so far this month have included tone quality and the starting, middle and ending of each note. Group band has focused on following the cues of a conductor and starting and stopping together with great success.
6-8 Select & Concert Chorus
Concert is Thursday, December 13th @ 7:00p.m.
Select Chorus will perform the National Anthem for the Manchester Monarch’s on November 17th
Select Chorus will perform for the Pre-schools & Senior Center on Friday, December 14th from 8:15a.m. - 11:30a.m.
6-8 Concert and Jazz Band
Our 6th Grade band students have stepped up to the plate as they are now members of our 6-8 concert band. The technical demand the responsibility of their music has increased substantially and they are putting forth a great effort so far. While in the band room they are working hard and engaged as our 7th/8th grade students are offering support. All 6th grade students are gaining confidence in their abilities during lessons and making great improvements. Please continue to encourage practicing habits at home.
Classroom Music
5th Grade Music students started the year off with setting healthy expectations for respecting each other and treating each other with kindness. This activity will allow students to take risks in music class and build a supportive culture to express their musicianship. Throw 1’s! We also are learning about Tempo, Dynamics, and how those two elements create an effect for a certain piece. These are the building blocks for activities throughout the year.

We are reviewing our note names on the G-Clef and F-Clef. Students may practice on www.musictheory.net at home! We will be exploring scales, key signatures and chords with this foundation. We are also practicing our active listening skills applied to instruction and musical examples.

Also, we have started the year learning about the different genres in music. We have started researching artists that perform in each genre and will participate in a culminating activity as a class.
Library
5th Grade Library Students are reviewing basic Library skills. They have been learning how to use Destiny, the library book catalog, to search for books in the library, differentiate between Fiction and Nonfiction books, and create citations for nonfiction books. Students are also creating NoodleTools accounts to use as a tool to streamline research. We will begin our first research project in Library class this month.

Students also renewed their district NoodleTools accounts to use as a tool to streamline research. We will begin our first research project on the topic of inventions in Library class this month.
Art
For the first few weeks of September, every student in 5th through 8th grade has worked on a collaborative quilt project. This will be on display in the main hallway downstairs. You will be able to see the quilt and other upcoming projects on Mrs. Gosselins Instagram page this year once again. You can follow the art room on Instagram at nissitissitart.
5th Grade In September and October students in 5th grade will be learning about Vincent Van Gogh and create a harvest landscape inspired by Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”.
6th Grade In September/October students in 6th grade will be creating interesting symmetrical name designs.
7th Grade In September and October students in 7th grade will be introduced to the Mexican Holiday El Dia De Los Muertos and explore printmaking. Students will print their own Calevera (skull) designs.
8th Grade In September and October students will be working on drawing a fall still life using line to create value.
Health
Grade 5 We have been working on communication and listening skills. Ask your students about the drawing activity we completed in class. We will be working on goal setting for themselves both in school and out of school that they would like to accomplish.
Grade 6 We have explored the health triangle and the 3 aspects that make up the triangle. We are looking at different types of lifestyles and benefits.
Grade 7 We have explored the 7 aspects of wellness. We will be talking about peer pressure and how to combat it appropriately.
Grade 8 We are starting information about CPR. I am an American Red Cross trained instructor and will be teaching the students how to help in emergency situations. They will not be certified when we are done with the unit.
