In 8th grade English Language Arts, Honors Level students will be completing a Literary

Analysis Essay on the Horror Unit, while Grade Level students will be completing a Text Dependent Analysis on a short story. In addition, all 8th-grade ELA students will begin a novel study in which they will analyze characters, settings, events, author’s craft, and themes.

English 1 students will finalize a short story unit focusing on horror elements. Students will complete a literary analysis. We will begin a novel study in which they will focus on characters, author’s craft, figurative language, and themes.

In 8th grade math, students will be working on Proportional and Linear Relationships in Unit 3. They will be able to write equations for proportional lines using the format y = kx, with "k" being the constant of proportionality(rate of change). Then, students will elaborate this equation into the y = mx + b slope intercept form. They will be able to write the equation from multiple forms as well as create graphs given the equation.

In addition to concepts for general math, studients will complete Unit 4, which is Linear Equations and Linear Systems. Students will be able to solve equations with one variable in multiple ways. Students will also see equations with one, none, or infinite solutions. Students will solve systems of equations by graphing and using algebra.

Students will be able to solve equations and inequalities in one variable and identify if the equation/expression has one solution, no solution, or infinite solutions. Students will investigate and rewrite expressions involving simple radicals and rational exponents and be able to find the sum/difference as well as product of irrational values. Students will be able to extend their knowledge of a function by writing in function notation, and modeling relations and functions in different forms.

The eighth grade students will start the quarter with investigating electric and magnetic forces and how they interact. Students will determine how their strength can be increased and utilized. Then students will move onto waves. Investigations will be done about the amplitude and relation to energy of waves. Then students will gain an understanding of how waves are utilized to transmit information.

In 8th grade Social Studies, students will be covering the sequence of South Carolina history from Colonial and Revolutionary Eras,through building a new nation and into the early stages of sectionalism of the Antebellum Era. Skills will focus on explaining, analyzing, and contextualizing primary and secondary sources, informational texts containing multiple perspectives, historical maps and data. Reading and writing like a historian using textual evidence to support claims is integral to demonstrating an understanding of the content.
