ROCKET NEWS
December 2018
Our Read-A-Thon will end on Wednesday, December 5, 2018. Students will read for more than 200 minutes in school and raise money online to purchase books and other reading resources. If we are able to meet our goal of raising $7,500, the top earning student in each grade will have the opportunity to bring a friend to a pizza lunch with administrators and the top earning class in the school will earn a dance party!
Virtue of the Month: Self-Discipline
Self-discipline mean self-control. It is doing what you really want to do, rather than being tossed around by your feelings like a leaf in the wind. You act instead of react. You get things done in an orderly and efficient way. With self-discipline, you take charge of yourself. You are practicing self-discipline when you...
- Use detachment so your emotions won't control you
- Speak and act calmly when you are hurt or angry
- Create routines that bring peace and order to your day
- Practice moderation
- Do what is expected without anyone watching over you
- Do things on time
All ESOL students in grades K - 5 will take an English (WIDA) exam in January / February. They will be tested in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Reports of results will not be available until the end of May.
Lost & Found
Woodholme’s Lost & Found is overflowing with unlabeled and unclaimed sweaters, jackets, coats, hats, etc! Please come and visit to claim your missing items! All unclaimed items will be donated to a clothing closet over winter break.
Nurse's Nook
The weather is changing. Be sure your child has appropriate clothing in his/her locker - accidents and spills happen! Make sure any medications and a doctor's order form are given to the nurse. Eat healthy, get enough rest and fresh air, and have fun exercising!
Early Dismissal
With the cold season, it's time to plan for inclement weather and school. In the event that schools close early due to weather, all children should be aware of how they are to dismiss. Any changes to normal dismissal procedures must be put in writing to your child's teacher. For late openings, early outs or closings, watch or read TV or social media for any BCPS delays, dismissals or closings.
Please view the December calendar for information on upcoming events at Woodholme! The PTA has organized a Hot Skates Night on Dec 6th at the Woodlawn location! Come join us for the PTA meeting on Thursday, December 13th at 6 PM in the library! All are welcome to attend, and it's not too late to join the PTA to show your support of the school and families!
A Note From the Principal
Dear Families,
We are excited to offer another fun and learning opportunity for our families this Tuesday, December 4th during our Family Math Night from 5:45 - 7:45 PM. This night continues a similar theme and same Open House format as our Literacy Night. Join us Tuesday evening for "Cocoa, Cookies and Counting!" Our fabulous PTA has once again generously offered to sponsor the treats of cookies and cocoa for the event, and teachers and staff have prepared fun games and activities for the evening so families can walk through the rooms and building to learn ways to help students grow in math. Each family will get to take home a "Math -2-go" pack that includes materials and activities for fun math practice and extension! Please join us for a fun event this Tuesday! Doors will open at 5:45 PM.
What a busy month November was for us! We appreciated all of the parents, grandparents and family members who visited us during American Education week, even despite an unexpected snow day off. It was a great chance for teachers to showcase student achievement at Woodholme and to show what students are learning and doing at school, so thank you to all who were able to join us! As always, we remain thankful for the support from our families. Teachers are working extremely hard to plan and provide engaging and meaningful academic instruction, so parent support and collaboration is crucial and appreciated. We are also grateful to the parents who met with teachers for Parent-Teacher conferences Friday and before/after school on other days. Students are more successful when their parents take an active role in their learning, so thanks to those parents and guardians who partnered with teachers to discuss student progress. It's not too late if you were unable to meet with your child's teachers. Email or call teachers to set up a date/time to discuss your child's progress and how you can help your child be more successful. Thanks for working together!
Enjoy the exciting month of December, and we wish all of our Woodholme families peace and relaxation with family and friends for the upcoming holidays this month!
Sincerely,
Principal Young
