HSA Volunteer Sign Up
Garnet Valley Elementary Home & School Association is grateful for the volunteers who plan & prepare the many programs and events each school year to help provide the best school experience possible for our children. The HSA relies on volunteers to run smoothly, so if you can help just a little, it will make a BIG difference! Many of our volunteers find that they receive something in return for their time and talents:
• Spending quality time with your child and friends
• Investing your time in bettering our school community
• Making a difference in your child’s life by sharing your knowledge, experience and skills
• Developing leadership, communication and organizational skills
• Having FUN and making new friends!
At GVES we have a Committee for each program/event we do. The committee works as a team to plan and execute their event with the help of additional volunteers. One individual will be designated as the committee lead . The committee lead will be responsible for coordinating meetings, ensuring the committee is on schedule and communicating directly with the HSA Board. Each committee will also have volunteers to assist with the event as needed (i.e. volunteer during book fair, help assemble flyers, monitor mileage club). To sign up as a volunteer be sure to select "General Help" at the end of the survey.
Please sign up for as many committee opportunities as you are interested in. After you complete the committee portion you will be asked about being a committee lead. If you have students in multiple schools please note the time frame of events when signing up. Opportunities include Board positions, committee chairs, committee members, and event volunteers. We will contact you prior to the beginning of next school year. Please reply by June 7, 2019. Thank you.

Garnet Valley CTC Quick Tip #40 – Parent/Caregiver Bond
The results are back from the 2017 Pennsylvania Youth Survey for Garnet Valley’s 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th graders. We also have results from 2013 and 2015.
The results of this anonymous survey are self-reported and represent 83.9% of our students.
Did you know? “Two-thirds of youth ages 13 to 17 say losing their parents’ respect and pride is one of the main reasons they don’t smoke marijuana or use other drugs (Research Update, Preventing Adolescent Substance Abuse, Butler Center for Research, 2010). In Garnet Valley approximately 7 out of 10 students (74%) from both PAYS 2015 and 2017, report that they are very close to their parent/care givers and share their thoughts and feelings with them. This protective factor is called Family Attachment. Family Attachment was one of Garnet Valley’s strongest protective factors. It has also been shown to be one of the most powerful means of keeping youth safe and successful (http://youth.gov/youth-topics/youth-mental-health/risk-and-protective-factors-youth).
Call to action… Keep your attachment strong this summer with the following 5 tips. 1. Build Connections and utilize summer fun to strengthen bonds, 2. Talk Early and Often about alcohol, tobacco ( vaping) and other drugs, 3. Reduce Access to alcohol, tobacco ( vaping), and other drugs including prescription drugs in your home, 4. Monitor your Child’s Friends and Activities since youth will do what their friends do, 5. Know Current Drugs of Abuse – go to the links below. https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/principles-adolescent-substance-use-disorder-treatment-research-based-guide/introduction
(How are the Children? SRFC, 2017).
