Spooner Elementary News
November 2016
RAILS Way
Additionally, all the tickets from the week are collected each Friday and one student from each grade level has their ticket drawn and get to select something from the Prize Box in the office. We'll also be having monthly celebrations where students that earn tickets can participate in different activities. For November, the incentive is all-school Bingo!
Recognizing Law Enforcement and Veterans
This Friday, fourth grade students joined the Middle School and High School in observing the Veterans Day Ceremony at the High School. Students were able to witness the honor guard and heard about service from Veterans along with themed music from the High School band and choirs.
A banner thanking Veterans was also signed by all elementary students and will be shared with the Veterans Center in Spooner.
Report Cards
In last month's newsletter was some information about the standards and assessment marks (1 - Not Yet, 2 - Working Towards, 3 - Proficient). This month I wanted to note a couple of other differences that you'll see.
First, the allied arts classes (Phys. Ed., Music, and Art) will only be issuing grades after second quarter and fourth quarter. As a result, you will not see those on your child's report card from first quarter. These teachers see all the students in the building and it is helpful to have a longer grading window in order to be able to more fully assess student abilities and knowledge with identified standards.
Additionally, in building the new report card and adjusting to the changes, we are rolling out some features later in the year. Two of these would be the addition of "comments" for each subject matter and behavior grades. Eventually, the report card will have a spot where student behaviors (i.e. respect, responsibility, etc.) are identified and assessed. Likewise, there will be a spot on the report card for teachers to leave comments if they feel additional information is necessary.
The bottom-line is that we're excited about these changes and know that our work over the last three years in implementing standards based grading will provide a more accurate and meaningful report of student ability and growth.
