Lloyd Road School Newsletter

January 2017

Principal's Message:

Dear Parents/Guardians:

A Grade 5 Enrichment class from 1987 left an envelope addressed to the Lloyd Road School class of 2017 with details about a time capsule buried at Lloyd Road.

The envelope included information about the 1987 time capsule project including its contents, location, the process that was followed, and letters from the student participants. The capsule was buried in the spring of 1987 so we plan to unveil the capsule in early June 2017. We will then bury a time capsule of our own for future students and staff. Enrichment teacher Mrs. Adelson is helping plan a variety of school-wide time capsule activities that will help involve all classes in the time capsule project. We are starting the process to try and locate as many of the twenty students who were directly involved in organizing and burying the time capsule so they can be invited to the June ceremony. If anyone knows any of the student participants below please share our time capsule project with them and ask them to email Mr. Jerabek at jjerabek@marsd.org.

A copy of the newspaper article from the June 10th Bayshore Independent can be found here: http://www.digifind-it.com/matawan/DATA/independent/1987/1987-06-10.pdf

This quote gives a brief summary of the goal of the class of 1987.

“We tried to fill the capsule with artifacts representative of 1987 culture and lifestyle,” says Coordinator Stefan Sozomenu, 11, and enrichment teacher Judi Birnbach in a letter addressed to the capsule finders. “Our purpose in the project was to analyze our culture and leave a permanent record for a future generation's discovery," the message continues. “We felt it would be an interesting project for some future social studies class to analyze how much American culture and lifestyle have changed.”

Mrs. Judi Birnback was the teacher. Grade 4 and 5 teacher Mrs. Lasko was already able to locate and communicate with Mrs. Birnback who has since relocated out of state.

The student participants were:

Stephanie Locke

Peter Skidmore

Jennifer Fratello

Nicole Lamberti

Erica Poon

James Loughran

Charles Sharpe

Anita Gundanna

Michelle Barbarotta

Claire Joyce

Kim Scarborough

Susan Niola

Eric Ball

Imfiaz Siddiqui

Stefan Sozomenu

David Sickler

Eugene Russo

Adam Cooper

Jason Pagano

Mike Harriot

This is going to be an amazing experience for all Lloyd Road School students, staff, and school community members because it is one thing to read about history but to have the opportunity to be a direct participant in seeing history come alive is invaluable.

We will keep everyone updated on this process as we move through it.

Mr. Jerabek

Principal
