YLP Feature: Crafting New Beginnings
Student Spotlight
Leader of the Month
Victoria Buckner was nominated by several of her classmates for going out of her way to care for them, particularly many in the freshmen class. She is a role model for everyone and is always willing to help or simply give heartfelt advice. One student even wrote “She is a role model to the freshmen and has been there for them since the first day of school. She is a leader in choir and her Leading With Character class, even in times of stress. She simply makes people feel good about themselves.” Another student wrote “She is a great leader and is always there for someone in need. She is so supportive of the freshmen that they even call her “mom.” She brags about them like a mother too.” Our team believes that her humbleness and her ability to “be there” for others, makes her a strong role model in our school community.
Krista Prodoehl always keeps a smile on her face and radiates positivity to other students, even when she is stressed or not feeling well. She is always enthusiastic to help with projects and her strong faith and dedication to the handbell choir is inspiring. One student wrote ‘Whenever someone is down or feeling lost, she is there. If you don't know where God is she always helps. She is strong in her faith and always encourages others. She always greets everyone in the morning with a big smile and never gives up on anyone.” Our team believes that her constant Be Positive attitude helps makes IWA such a great place.
Queens of Character
A number of students were recently recognized by their fellow classmates at IWA. They were recognized for being helpful, kind, listening and compassionate - the hallmark of the Be There student. They were also rewarded for cheeriness, positivity, and a quick smile - the foundation of the Be Positive student. And finally, they were admired for courage, honesty, humility, faithfulness, and servant leadership - traits that underlie the Be United student. The students represented all classifications, from freshman to senior.
Were these nominations for Leader of the Month or Thank You Thursday? Student Council elections? National Honor Society application summaries? No, hardly. These were the attributes that were found in the nominations for Belles of the Ball at last week’s Winterball.
Instead of nominating Belles based on popularity or traditional measures of beauty or any other superficial criteria, IWA students leaned on character and leaders attributes to promote this year’s Belles. So be proud, IWA, you revealed the true meaning of sisterhood once again.

Freshman Program Team
On January 25, the Freshman Program team re-introduced “Popcorn Leadership,” a series of meetings that focus on analyzing popular movies through the scope of leadership traits and behaviors. In a lively discussion, the Freshman team and freshmen considered YLP’s “Be a Better You” theme and how the characters of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone embody “being there” for each other in a way that empowers those that they help. Come out next month to see what movie freshman have voted to watch as we discuss “Be United!”
Listen N' Lead Team
Mrs. Shannon Deitz told us her story about how she learned to be there for others who reach out to Hopeful Hearts Ministry, despite the sorrow she experienced as a survivor of abuse. She fought an inner battle between being a victim and trying to stay positive for her family. She also faced the dilemma of staying strong for others' peace of mind at the expense of her own well being and healing, but sh opened up to others so that she could advocate for the victimized. During her struggle, Mrs. Deitz renewed her faith by finding solace in God's love and trying to live her life freely.
Remember... Be a Better You!
