Congratulations to 5th grader Saleen Sanchez! She was nominated by RD Martinez Librarian Zulema Garza to be the SISD Library Volunteer of the Month! She participates in UIL, enjoys reading books, playing the piano, and helping out at the library.

PHS Students at David Garcia Memorial Library Dedication

Nicole Cruz was contacted by Gloria Meraz prior to the winter break. Ms. Meraz is the editor of the Texas Library Journal. She wanted permission from Mrs. Cruz to publish her "Why Libraries are Important" speech in the winter edition. Here is the link to the article. It can be found on page 6 and 7.

Christian Jacob Ramon 2014 Sharyland High School Graduate

Jacob is now pursuing majors in film and creative writing at Columbia University in New York City. Jacob plans to be a screenwriter/ director. He was one of two students to place 1st and 2nd in the video recording category at the Texas Media Awards last year! His framed photo is on display at the Penny Payte McLeaish Library as part of the Alumni Snapshot Campaign.

Texas Media Awards Deadline is January 16, 2015

Categories for participation include: animation, black & white photography, color photography, digital music composition, graphic design, video recording, multimedia presentation, book trailers, and web design. Students in grades PreK-12th grade can compete. Each entry must be sponsored by a campus librarian and supported with an entry fee. Visit to learn more!

Librarians are asked to submit photos, stories, and events each month for publication in the One for the Record Books publication.

2015 Reading Challenge

SISD Librarians are challenging themselves to be reading role models. Librarians can choose to participate in the 2015 Reading Challenge. Nicole Cruz created a Google Drive doc so each librarian can post his/ her titles. This is a perfect opportunity for sharing reading recommendations. She also posted the reading challenge to her SHS Book Club website.

SHS Students Smash Letters About Literature Contest

Seventy-seven is the number of entries submitted from Sharyland High School for the Letters About Literature Contest. The deadline to submit letters to your favorite author on how their book, play, or poem impacted them was December 15th. Mrs. Cruz advertised the competition through Remind messages, website banners, morning announcements, department meetings, and flyers at the library. She says, " I credit our amazing ELA teachers with encouraging their students to participate. I also credit our Dean of Instruction Jennifer Martinez with supporting this writing competition." Students in grades 4-6 and 7-8 are still able to submit a letter. Check this website to find out more details.

Blast Off MEGAByte Training @ Region One

Janie Flores, Nicole Cruz, and Zulema Garza participated in the Multimedia for Complete Integration Region One training on Friday, December 5th as part of the MEGAByte technology training that has been ongoing all year for librarians. All district librarians had the opportunity to sign up and attend this session. Thanks to campus principals for supporting this professional development.

Join the RGV Librarian Book Discussion

Donalyn Miller, author of The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child, will be the featured speaker at the Region One Spring Extravaganza Meeting on February 13th. Workshop # 43900. As a RGV library coordinator, Mrs. Cruz was recruited to lead chapter 6 discussion via the Region One Facebook page. Pick up a copy of this amazing book today and follow along.
