Getting Ready for 6th Grade

Important Dates:

We look forward to supporting your child with this exciting transition to middle school. Below are some important dates.


Monday, Feb 28 - Family MS letters went home. Attached are electives from your child's middle school.

March 11 - If needed the deadline to request a transfer through the Wake Co Office of Student Assignment - https://www.wcpss.net/student-assignment

March 14 - East Millbrook School Counselor, Marcell Lindsey, plans to meet at WES to discuss electives and other opportunities with students planning to attend EMS.

March 14 - "Transitioning to Middle School" session for parents at 6:30 (virtual) in English & Spanish - see google links below...

Thursday, March 17 - All 5th grade students visit Wakefield MS 11:15-12:45 (for students only, please sign permission form for your child to participate).

March 21-April 1 - Students register for electives during media special time

April 4 - Verification forms go home for parents to sign

April 25 - Verification forms are due to designated Middle School

March -May - students will learn helpful tips to navigate MS including how to open locks for lockers during media specials.

Field Trip to Wakefield Middle School - Thursday, March 17 11:15-12:45

We are grateful that WMS invited all of our 5th graders on a tour to see first hand what a middle school is like during a school day. Please have your child complete a permission slip to participate. We will walk over to WMS as a group. This is for students only.


  • Arrival: 11:15 am

  • Band performance & introduction of instruments 11:30 - 11:50

2 sessions: 11:50 - 12:05, 12:10 - 12:25

  • Session 1: Tour of 6th grade pod & elective areas

  • Session 2: Student Representatives Share Elective Experience & provide examples of work products

  • Drama performance 12:30 - 12:45

  • Closure / Dismissal: 12:45

Please check the website of your child's middle school for information about Open House Events. If your family has recently moved, or is enrolled in a charter or private school, please share updated address information with our Data Manager, Allyson Adams, at WES.

East Millbrook "Virtual" Open House - March 15 6-7:00

Transitioning to Middle School Parent Session - Monday, March 14 at 6:30 (Virtual)

Learn what to expect and what steps to take to ensure your child is ready for a smooth transition. They will also learn about the day-to-day school routine, extracurricular activities options, and how to access the Home Base Parent Portal. This will be presented by Wake County's Family Academy.
