Huskies Defeat Gadsden City to Open Region Play
The fourth-ranked Hewitt-Trussville Huskies opened region play by defeating Gadsden City 38-24. With the win the Huskies improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in 7A Region 4.
Senior Elliott McElwain, an Army commit, led the way with 175 yards rushing on 26 carries. He also added four touchdowns for the Huskies.
The Huskies took advantage of a Gadsden turnover to start the third quarter. When McElwain scored the Huskies led 28-3. Gadsden City fought back by scoring on a 66-yard run. The Huskies next drive stalled, and Gadsden City blocked the ensuing punt and returned it for a touchdown. That play cut the Huskies lead to 28-17.
Parker Colburn connected on a 33-yard field goal to cap the Huskies next drive. Gadsden City returned the following kickoff for 99 yards and a touchdown. All of a sudden, the Huskies led by just seven points.
With just over seven minutes left in the game, running back Antonio Reed scored from ten yards out to secure the win for the Huskies.
Coach Floyd said, “I’ll say this: I was really proud of our senior leaders. They were the ones talking in the fourth quarter, calming everybody down, calming me down a little bit even, saying, ‘Hey, we’ve been here before, it’s gonna be OK. And it was, they made the plays they had to make to win the game.”
Hewitt-Trussville will travel to Grissom on Friday September 15. The Grissom Tigers also won their Region opener.
