Thinking About You
LES Weekly Social-Emotional Update * June 5, 2020
Hello LES Families!
We are looking forward to the chance to connect with you next week! Please review Mrs. Lockett's guidelines (linked at the bottom of the newsletter) for pick up/drop off of materials at LES next week (in the Craven Lane upper parking lot loop), according to the following schedule:
- PreK: Monday, June 8, 8:30-1:00
- Kindergarten: Tuesday, June 9 from 8:30-1:00
- 1st grade: Wednesday, June 10 from 8:30 - 1:00
- 2nd grade: Thursday, June 11 from 8:30-1:00
- 3rd grade: Thursday, June 18 from 8:30-1:00
Our SEL theme this week explored problem solving, which is the last unit of our Second Step social-emotional curriculum. As recent events have shown, our students will greatly benefit from the ability to identify, speak up and brainstorm solutions to problems that not only effect their individual lives, but of those in their communities and their world as well. Check out today's read aloud for another opportunity to begin a conversation with your child in a developmentally appropriate way.

Coping Skill of the Week
It's important to try lots of different coping skills in order to find the ones that work best for you. The more coping skills we have to help us thru difficult times, the more resilient we will be. Learn more about the 5 Coping Skills Styles (with a handy checklist) at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TjAYs7RBuM&feature=youtu.be. (Credit: Coping Skills for Kids)
Don't forget our coping skill from the last few weeks:
- Find one good thing that happens each day and write it down
- Talk to someone you trust
- Wrap up in blanket or build a pillow fort
- Picture the people you care about
- Do a kindness for someone by writing a letter or baking a cake
- List your positive qualities and think positive thoughts
- Imagine your perfect world
- Take a deep breath (star breath, candle breath, belly breath - so many choices!)

More Ways to Practice Mindfulness
Listen to Imagine Neighborhood’s podcast episode: Problem Solving with the Fire Pirates! This creative podcast is aligned with our Second Step curriculum. In this episode, the Fire Pirates have a problem: how can they sail past Fieryous George the Lava Monster to get to the weekly hamburger treat??? (Spoiler Alert: If Cap'n Marion and Fieryous George the Lava Monster can compromise, so can you!) After you listen to the podcast, scroll down for more activities - involving music, movement, and mindfulness :-) Check it out at: https://www.imagineneighborhood.org/post/problem-solving-fire-pirates-activities
Read Aloud. Want to turn a dull day into a wonderful day? Make it a mindful day! When we slow down and pay close attention, we learn what it means to be mindful. In Mindful Day, early readers follow along as a young girl brings this special kind of attention to the various activities of her day with her family.
