Social Skills

Meet the members of the First Grade Expert Club who are teaching your child about social skills in the classroom.

  • Responsible Ryan
  • Ready to Learn Robert
  • Respectful Rachel
  • Really Safe Rita

These experts help children to think about and understand their role in the classroom. What does it mean to be part of a classroom community? How can I be a kind and good friend to others? How can I show I'm ready to learn and get my work done? How can I stay safe at school?

I sometimes tell students to make sure they are following the 4 R's. I'm sure you are already teaching your child these skills but it is sometimes beneficial for children to have information presented in the same manner at home and at school so I would encourage you to discuss these experts with your child. Maybe even use these experts at home should the need arise.

You can view each of the First Grade Experts by visiting my website (see link below).

Reading & Writing Workshop

I am beginning to launch Reading and Writing Workshop. If you are not familiar with the workshop model, here are the components:

Mini-Lesson

  • Learn reading and writing strategies and skills

Reading & Writing Time

  • Work independently
  • Teacher confers with students

Sharing Time:

  • Review reading & writing strategies
  • Share ideas with peers.

In reading, we are spending time talking about picking a just write book and reading for a purpose. We will also spend time talking about how to work with a partner during reading and writing time.

In writing, we will be writing personal narratives using a three page book. Students will be encouraged to write a beginning, middle and end and include beautiful illustrations to support their words.

Students are enjoying independent reading on rocking chairs which I purchased this summer.

Math

We are reviewing some skills students learned in kindergarten. I also introduced several math games which students can play throughout the year for practice and review. Our first unit in Go Math will begin the week of September 26th. Students will begin to receive a math skill sheet for homework each night (Monday through Thursday).

Social Studies

This week, we will begin our unit on Families. We will identify family members and determine their role in the family. We will also discuss how a family cares and supports each other.

Thank you for helping your child with the family tree leaves. We will be making a family tree in class this week.
