Max THe Dog
Maximus
Max, named after the scientific elephant name Elephas maximus, was a rescue brought to the Houston Zoo as a puppy. Max is a mixed breed terrier that has been at the Houston Zoo since 2008. He shares an exhibit with the elephants. Max acts as an important training tool for the elephant department as well as a companion animal to the elephants. Max plays ball while the elephant barn is being cleaned every morning. He plays ball during the day, then sleeps in his own area at night. He was taught “boundaries” and how not to get stepped on.
