Math Meet #2 Wrapup
A full team of 40 students represented Manchester Essex this past week at the second Math Meet of the year yesterday afternoon at Masconomet Middle School. The top scorer for the ENTIRE MEET with 16 points was 8th grader Maria C. Maria took home a well-deserved certificate for this outstanding accomplishment. 8th grader Julia K. and 7th grader Emerson K. scored 12 apiece, while 8th grader Spencer M. also reached double digits with 10. These four high scorers helped Team One vault to a second place finish. Thanks to all students for participating in another fun, challenging meet. Start 2016 off right by competing in the third meet of the season on Thursday, January 14 at Rockport. Mr. Stefanek and Ms. Kavanagh will release practice packets for Meet #3 sometime in December. New and returning students are both welcome.
Veterans Day H Block: 11.10.15
On Tuesday, November 10, 2015, MERMHS welcomed Marine Corps veteran Mr. Larry Kirby. Mr. Kirby fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima, and has served in other capacities in protecting our nation. Mr. Kirby spoke to the entire middle and high school, speaking about the sacrifice that he and his fellow veterans made to protect our freedom in the United States. One of the most poignant lines of his speech referred to his fellow USMC soliders who lost their lives at Iwo Jima: "Those men gave up their lives, so you could live yours." Prior to Mr. Kirby's speech, two eighth graders, Owen D. and Rowan S. gave thoughtful speeches to the entire study body about what Veterans Day means to them.
After the assembly, middle schoolers reported back to their H Block Advisory groups to debrief the speech. Students also learned about the red poppy as a symbol of veterans, and read the poem, "In Flanders Field," the inspiration for this symbol. Afterwards, each H Block Advisory completed a string of poppies, as a visual reminder of Veterans Day and the sacrifice our soldiers have made to protect our nation's freedom. These are hanging in the middle school main office. Some advisories also had enough time to complete a thank you card, which we will send to soldiers as part of Operation Gratitude. Operation Graditude (http://www.operationgratitude.com/can-help/) is also looking for donations of leftover Halloween Candy! If you are looking to get rid of your candy, please send it into the middle school main office labeled "Operation Gratitutde," and we will send it, along with thank you cards, to our soldiers abroad.
