Healthy Falcon Habits!
What does your teen need from you?
Building relationships with our kids and maintaining healthy family connections are basic goals for us as parents. Our teens need us! As we stated last week, many of our students have expressed a desire to change some of their daily habits, citing their parents as their greatest source for setting boundaries and holding them accountable. Despite what they say to us and about us, our teens still need us just as much as when they were little. Check out some of the things they need from parents and caregivers during this time in their development. Healthy habits can start small. Be encouraged by implementing a new one this week.
Please contact any one of us with questions or concerns about your child’s social, emotional, or mental health during the school year. We’ll be there for you!

8th Grade
MATH:
We just finished up our systems of equations unit. Our next is Exponents and Scientific notation. Students will learn how to:
-Use Properties of integer exponents
-Generate equivalent numerical expressions using properties of integer exponents.
-Use patterns in tables to recognize how zero and negative exponents can represent small and large numbers.
-Convert numbers with negative exponents to equivalent fractions and decimals.
-Represent large and small numbers in scientific notation.
-Convert between scientific notation and decimal notation.
-Add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers in scientific notation.
ALGEBRA:
In Algebra, we are currently working on Chapter 8 Factoring. In section 8.1, students will develop a method to change a quadratic equation written as a sum into its product form (also called its factored form). Then they will learn shortcuts for factoring some quadratics. In section 8.2,students will generate each representation of a quadratic function (rule, graph, table, and situation) from each of the others. They will also develop a method to find the x-intercepts of a parabola using the Zero Product Property. Then they will see another way to write the equation of a parabola, called graphing form, and use square roots to find the x-intercepts. Finally students will “complete the square” to change between standard form and graphing form of a quadratic function.
LITERACY:
Students have finished writing their memoirs in literacy and did a great job. Classes are finishing our Anne Frank Collection just in time to visit the Holocaust Museum this coming week. Our next writing unit will be position papers where students will choose a side and argue their position. We will also begin reading Collection 4 that explores things teenagers experience as they grow into adults.
DUAL LITERACY:.
In Dual Literacy, students have read and discussed the meaning of William Ernest Henley’s poem “Invictus.” Students were later assigned an article detailing the influence the poem had on someone. They then worked in groups to explain to each other whether their person was positively or negatively influenced. They will use this information to write an essay comparing and contrasting the poem’s influence and answer the essential question: how can one text influence different people?
SOCIAL STUDIES
In Social Studies the student just finished World War II articles using the expert group strategy to create an overview of the events throughout the war. They created sketchnote presentations which were presented to the remainder of each class. In preparation for our upcoming trip to the Holocaust Museum, the students have been focused on studying the reasons why the Holocaust happened, the people involved, and the eventual outcome of it. The main goal of the Holocaust education is to make sure the students understand why and how it happened and make sure that it never happens again. The field trip will give the students a first hand look into the Holocaust and will end with them hearing a survivor's which makes the learning of this topic more personal.
DUAL SOCIAL STUDIES:
In our Dual Language Classes we are working on finishing our research steps, using the Big 6 Inquiry research, to create a presentation on Google My Maps explaining the Great War using our 4 disciplines or lenses for the social studies standards to study WWI by understanding geography, history, economics and civics. In research groups of 4, students are becoming experts on their discipline to understand the causes and effects of the war, and the repercussions that this war had on the economy for the 1920s and the Great Depression. Also the impact that The treaty of Versalles had on leading us into WWII because it was not created to have lasting peace. We will be visiting the Holocaust Museum next week!
SCIENCE:
In science we continue to explore how various forces impact the motion of an object for example: gravity, friction, and Newton’s Three Laws of Motion. We explored each of Newton’s laws utilizing several of the lessons designed by Christa McAuliffe, the teacher who was aboard the Challenger Spaceship and even analyzed how the laws would apply in space. We will culminate this unit by completing our egg drop lab. After we finish our motion unit, we will begin learning about the nature of energy, as well as its different forms.
