District Staff Gears Up for the 2018-19 School Year
The West Linn-Wilsonville Operations Staff underwent two full days of safety training last week, and school secretaries got back in the swing of things with a Welcome Back breakfast and morning of learning on Monday. Here's to a year of Leading For All!
Register to Volunteer in WLWV Schools
Are you interested in volunteering in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District?
Last year, the district launched an updated process for volunteer registration and sign-in to improve safety and security for students. The HelpCounter system includes an approval process and helps staff monitor exactly who is working in WLWV schools.
Interested volunteers can register by visiting the district website and navigating to “Volunteer Registration” under the Community Tab. Simply click ‘Start’ to fill out your application, which includes a background check. The first time that volunteers sign-in to volunteer at any WLWV school they will be prompted to accept a Volunteer Agreement. Volunteers must also re-register every three years, or when volunteering at a new school.
Note that volunteer coaches register through a different process. Contact your school’s athletic director or principal for more information.
Volunteering in WLWV schools is an extremely rewarding experience. Your time is greatly appreciated by both staff and students!
Get Connected to your school by signing up for ListServ
Are you new to the district, or are you changing schools? If so, it’s time to update your ListServ subscription!
ListServ is the primary method that West Linn-Wilsonville schools communicate with families, sending regular newsletters, timely information, and even emergency notifications. To sign up to get news from your school, simply go to www2.wlwv.k12.or.us/News/LatestNews/ListservSS/ and follow the directions. Don’t forget to subscribe to WLWV Homes to get information from the district office!
What's Cooking in your School Cafeteria?
New to this year’s WLWV Community Update Newsletter will be regular updates from the Nutrition Services Department. The regular “What’s Cooking” section will provide families with important cafeteria news, as well as fun nutrition facts for everyone to enjoy. Make sure to check out the nutrition services website, too, for other exciting information relating to health and nutrition in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District. There, families can sign up for the district’s breakfast and lunch programs, or apply for Oregon’s free and reduced lunch program.
The nutrition services department is also excited to add even more delicious and nutritious food options to your cafeteria this coming school year. In addition to the locally-sourced foods that have become staples of school breakfast and lunch menus, WLWV is excited to continue the ‘Harvest of the Month,’ which will incorporate a new and delicious food option in cafeterias throughout the school year.
The Harvest of the Month will often come straight from CREST, where students and staff grow yummy fruits and vegetables for all WLWV students to enjoy. Students can look forward to food items such as grapes, kiwi berries, and lemon cucumbers among other Harvest of the Month items.
WLWV Honored with Governmental Financial Reporting Award for 25th-Straight Year
The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.
The CAFR is judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, which includes demonstrating a constructive "spirit of full disclosure" to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR.
PRIMARY School Calendar Change
Early Release, Professional Growth Wednesdays provide teachers time to better prepare for student learning by creating more frequent opportunities to collaborate. To increase frequency for collaborative time, the April 8 Professional Development Day at the PRIMARY LEVEL has been exchanged for four Early Release, Professional Growth Wednesdays. This means that primary school students will now attend a full day of school on Monday, April 8. And, on February 20, March 6, April 10 and May 8, students will be released two hours early to allow teachers time for collaboration.
This exchange of a full day of instruction for students in order to provide four Early Release, Professional Growth Wednesdays was part of a negotiated agreement with our teachers' association as well as a priority set by our School Board and district leadership. Teacher collaboration allows small teams of educators to plan for each students' strengths and specific learning needs while strengthening the teacher's own teaching practices. This exchange of a student day for four Early Release, Professional Growth Wednesdays continues to fulfill state requirements for instructional hours, exceeding the state expectations.
This change does not affect middle schools or high schools. April 8 will continue to be a Grading Day for our secondary schools who have a different system for assessment and feedback to students and parents through mid-semester and semester grades.
The After-school childcare programs located in our primary schools have already been notified and will adjust accordingly. They will function the same as they do for other Early Release, Professional Growth Wednesdays.
The change to the primary calendar is currently being communicated through the district listserve during the summer and into the school year. The amended calendar will be posted on the district website and Facebook. School listserves will also run the message beginning in August and throughout the school year.
The updated 2018-19 Primary Calendar can be found on the district website.
FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS ONLY, ADDED REGULAR SCHOOL DAY:
- Monday, April 8
FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS ONLY, ADDITIONAL EARLY RELEASE, PROFESSIONAL GROWTH WEDNESDAYS:
- February 20, March 6, April 10, May 8
