Mrs. King's 2nd Grade Class!

January 25, 2019

Class WOW Reward!

After getting back in the swing of things from winter break, these kids have been rock stars! They have reached our goal of 20 class wows. Today they brainstormed 6 different ways they'd like to celebrate and after a class wide vote, TOY DAY was the winner! Next Thursday, January 31st each child is permitted to bring in a toy of his/her choice. Please make sure it fits in your child's back pack. I'll be sure to remind the class on Wednesday evening!

Friendship Party

Friendship Party on February 14th:

The Friendship Parties this year will be held on Thursday, February 14th from 2:15 to 3:00 p.m. Information from room parents will be sent home regarding volunteers.

Students will be participating in a Valentine Exchange with their classmates. We have 24 students in our classroom. Please note that students may NOT distribute Valentines that include food, candy, or balloons.

If you have any specific questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

B Present Studio Study Trip

Our study trip to B Present Studio is quickly approaching. For this study trip, each child can plan to wear his/her class t-shirt along with comfortable tennis shoes. Each child will be asked to bring a water bottle. Yoga mats are requested. The studio has a small handful we can borrow, and I have found an additional 6. Do you happen to have a yoga mat at home your child could use that morning? Thanks for considering! We are super excited to use this time to not only push our bodies, but also to push our mindset. We've been talking a lot about the philosophy of: "If you think you CAN!"

Second Grade Study Trip

We are so excited to start this new year (semester) learning about our local community through the world of commerce. Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, February 6th, 7th, or 8th we are going to Castleton Square Mall to learn about producers, consumers, goods, and services. Students will explore the world of retail by identifying whether stores provide goods and/or services, using cardinal directions on a map, and enjoying a meal at Buca Di Beppo®.

World Read Aloud Day

Next Friday, Feb. 1st is World Read Aloud Day! This is such a great day for us to invite parents or special family members in to read aloud to our class! If you are interested in coming in to share one of your favorite books with our class, please email me and let me know a time that might work best for you! We will be having recess and lunch from 11:00-12:30 and we go to specials from 2:55-3:30, so those are 2 time slots we will need to try to avoid. The other part of the day is open to visitors! Please let me know if you'd like to join us! We look forward to having you in!

Global Day of Play

On Wednesday, February 6, TCE will celebrate Global School Day of Play (Due to our study trip, we will plan to participate on Friday, February 8th instead!). Unstructured play is vital to the development of a child. Our goal is to teach children about the importance of play by making it a priority. On Wednesday, February 6th students can bring in their favorite toys from home. Toys brought from home should be school appropriate and fit into their backpacks. Thank you for helping us make this day a success! If you are interested in learning more about this day, I tweeted a wonderful TED X Talk about it on Twitter earlier this week! Be sure to check it out!

A Message from Global Studies!

Global Studies Newsletter

*** Important information regarding Chinese Snack Tasting is included in this newsletter and your response is needed if you decide to opt-out.***

In the recent two weeks 1st to 4th grade students have been learning how to say some animals in Chinese. 2nd-4th grade students are doing a great job using the verbs “like” and “have” to form sentences like “I have cats”, “You don’t have dogs”, “I like horses”, and “You don’t like snake”. They also learned how to ask questions like “Do you like horses?” and “Don’t you like rabbits?” in Chinese. I am so impressed with how quickly they learn! 1st grade students had lots of fun learning about the 12 Chinese zodiac animals and coloring Happy New Year 2019, the Year of Pig.

During the week of February 11, 2019, students will be tasting a Chinese snack during their Global Studies class. Please see picture below for the nutrition information. If you do NOT wish your child to taste the snack, please fill out the Opt-Out form by following the link below and submit your response by February 1st, 2019. We will also send out paper permission slips home for certain students with allergy concerns. Thank you for your attention!

Mark your calendars for our TCE FAMILY STEAM NIGHT on Thursday,
January 31 from 5:30-7:00 pm. STEAM is an educational term to describe real-world opportunities for students to learn with science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math. At the TCE Family STEAM Night, TCE students and their family members of all ages are welcome to come and participate in a variety of unique, educational STEAM experiences. Participants will travel as a family (children with their adults) to share in the learning process! Pizza and water will be available in the cafeteria for families to purchase. We hope to see you there!

Background Checks & Anti-Bullying Video

All who desire to volunteer, chaperone fieldtrips, or eat lunch in the cafeteria must have an approved background check on file and complete the Anti-bullying video. Background checks are good for 3 years. If you have questions about your background check, please contact the TCE office @ (317) 594-4310.

Optional Spelling Practice at Home

On Tuesday, a new set of words were sent home with your child. We will work with these words for two weeks at a time. Feel free to practice these sorts at home! Also, I will not be giving spelling tests over these words this year, but rather check with each student by checking to see if they can spell the words based on their spelling patterns.

Repeated Sort: Students will sort their words. Then check their words using the answer key. Then sort their words again!

Draw and Label: Students choose 10 of their words. Then they will draw a picture of each world and label it.

Blind Sort: Using given guide words, or headers, students spell or write in words in the correct category as a partner calls each word aloud without showing it.

Writing Sort: Students write their words under the correct category.

Speed Sort: Students sort words quickly under the correct categories (use a timer to see how fast they can do it!) Students love to beat records and to set goals for themselves.

Word Hunt: Students hunt through their own reading and writing for words that are additional examples of the sound, pattern, or meaning unit they study!

Buddy Sort: Using the given headers, students sort their words with a partner, then discuss. They will then check their work with their answer key.

We are Learning

This week in reading, we had lots of discussions about what good readers do. We are all doing a wonderful job of reading fluently, but we also discussed how readers need to think while they are reading. Good readers should constantly question everything they read. While reading this week, there were a few opportunities for us to check some facts the author shared with us. It also led us to new thoughts and ideas!

This week we used our writing time to work on a middle of the year writing prompt, as well as worked on our plant project. Next week in writing we will work on opinion writing. I'm super excited to dig into our next writing genre!

In language this week we have been focusing on pronouns. We learned that a pronoun can take the place of a noun. We discussed why they are important and how we can use them in our writing to make it a little more interesting. We also practiced proper usage! Next week we will move on from nouns and after a quick review of verbs, we will begin digging into adverbs.

This week during math we worked on writing the fraction for a picture given. We also began comparing fractions using pictures. This week we also continued working on time conversions. For example: If there are 7 days in a week, how many days would be in 12 weeks? We also practiced measuring using both inches and centimeters. Next week we will continue working on these concepts, but we will be digging deeper with them!

Social Studies

Second grade will be studying economics over the coming weeks. We will deepen our understanding of goods vs. services, consumers vs. producers, needs vs. wants, and human, capital, and natural resources. We will culminate our study of economics with a study trip to Castleton Mall in February.
