AUSD FUTURE PLANS FOR IMPROVEMENT

AUSD is embarking on a process to identify the strategic direction and actions we need to take to continue to improve our schools and ensure that our students receive a world-class education. In October, we will launch a process to capture your thoughts and ideas. One of our goals is to increase meaningful participation with our students, parents, community, and staff and continue to build your confidence and trust in our schools. Stay tuned for more information.

IMPROVING MATH KNOWLEDGE

This school year, we are focused on significantly increasing the math content knowledge of our teachers. We are taking a comprehensive approach toward professional development. During this school year, teachers will take part in full-day training sessions with their grade level cohort as well as District-wide trainings bringing all teachers together. By deepening our teachers' understanding of mathematics, they will be able to facilitate student learning and increase our students' mathematical knowledge.

SPANISH DUAL IMMERSION AT JMMS

Our first dual immersion middle school students began at JMMS this August. We are excited to expand our dual immersion Spanish program through middle school. Most of these students began learning Spanish in our Kindergarten program.

INCREASING STUDENT SUPPORT

We are increasing our efforts to enhance the social and emotional support for our students. This includes the addition of a full-time teacher on special assignment at JMMS to support student success. In addition, we are partnering with the Sandy Hook Promise Foundation to educate our middle school students about the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System, which teaches students how to look for warning signs, signals and threats, especially in social media, and to say something to a trusted adult or by using the Anonymous Reporting System to get help. We will be holding a parent education evening in the coming months to introduce parents to the program in advance of rolling it out to our students.

WHEEL OF EXPERTS - S.T.E.A.M. EFFORTS

We are expanding the “Wheel of Experts”, a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (S.T,E.A.M.) based multiple pathway program provided for student enrichment. Students from kindergarten through 5th grade will be exposed to multiple STEAM based courses throughout the school year. As students progress in the program year-to-year, the curriculum will become more advanced, and allow students to explore pathways of interest going into and throughout middle school and high school. This terrific Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math offering is designed for Alpine Union students from Kindergarten through the 5th Grade and is supported and funded through the generosity of the Alpine Education Foundation.

KINDNESS WEEK

Every other month, we will be celebrating Kindness Week across AUSD. Our goal is to acknowledge and celebrate acts of kindness, respect and be compassionate to one another. We hope you will join in helping our students celebrate one another and develop the ability to be empathetic. Our first Kindness Week will take place September 24 - 28.

SUPERINTENDENT PARENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE

One of our key goals is to make sure we build strong connections with our parents and community. The Superintendent’s Parent Advisory Council (SPAC) consists of a group of parents from across AUSD that provide input and recommendations on a range of school district issues, including new policies, projects, and materials that impact students and their families. SPAC members will be particularly focused on how to increase parent and family engagement to ensure student academic success. SPAC meetings occur every other month. If you are interested in being part of the SPAC please contact Mary Ann Alvarez at malvarez@alpineschools.net. The first meeting is scheduled for September 24th at 6:00 p.m.

EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION PROGRAM

You can recognize and celebrate AUSD staff! Our #TEAM AUSD and Everyday Heroes Recognition Programs recognize the valuable contributions of District employees to our students, schools, and community. You can recognize and submit a nomination form from our District website. Click here to recognize a staff member.

CELC PLAYGROUND UPGRADES

Our CELC playground received a much needed upgrade this summer. Our students love the new playground with all the new opportunities for games.

EARLY ADMISSION KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

CELC will start accepting EAK registrations online on Oct. 1st. Do you have a child turning 5 between December 2nd and January 31st? He or she is eligible for Early Admission to Kindergarten (EAK). EAK provides an opportunity for students to get an early start on their education. Class placement is based on birthdate and date registration packet is received. Please click here to access the registration form.

MINIMUM DAY/COLLABORATION DAY WEDNESDAYS

We are excited to be implementing Collaborative Teacher Planning Time this school year. These will be minimum days to support our vision of improving learning outcomes for students by providing opportunities for teacher collaboration and professional learning. These days will occur at each school site and are focused on providing time for teachers to collaborate and work together on grade and content level areas.
