When is breakfast served?
On days when school is scheduled to start two hours late, or the weather dictates that we start two hours late, breakfast is NEVER served at 10:00.
If you child needs breakfast, but will not be here to eat from 7:40-8:10, they will need to eat at home.

A new principal at Franklin?
Dear Franklin Families,
It is with mixed emotions that I tell you I will be leaving Franklin at the end of June to take the Director of Teaching & Learning position for the Mankato Area Public Schools. While I am excited to work with our schools across the district to achieve our mission of Assuring learning excellence and readiness for a changing world, the change will mean that I leave the students, families and staff that are so dear to me.
In the coming weeks, the process will begin to identify the next principal for Franklin Elementary to lead the continued excellence for our students and families.
I cannot thank you enough for the opportunity to serve as your principal, and look forward to working with Franklin's new principal.
Forever a Falcon,
Travis
When will school start & end next year?
For more information about this news release, contact Superintendent Paul Peterson at 507-387-1868.
Mankato-School start and end times for elementary, middle and high schools in Mankato Area Public Schools (MAPS) have been established for the 2020-2021 school year. New school times reflect the school district’s transition next year to a two-tiered busing system.
Beginning September 2020:
- MAPS Preschool 8 a.m. morning start time
- Elementary schools 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
- Bridges Community School 8:20 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.
- Middle schools 8:35 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.
- High schools 8:45 a.m. to 3:35 p.m.
After the new system was approved by the School Board in December, district leaders began developing plans to address areas of concern shared during a community input phase. These included: before and after school child care, student supervision, and the impact on co-curricular departure times.
"Having start and end times finalized now provides families and staff a significant amount of lead time in preparing for the next school year," says Paul Peterson, superintendent of Mankato Area Public Schools. "The times reflect input received while the school district was studying the concept and also since the School Board took action. An 8 a.m. start time for elementary schools aligns nicely with several areas we knew we needed to address, especially related to child care and student supervision."
District officials have developed detailed plans to assist in transition to tiered busing and will communicate regularly with families and the community in advance of the change. "This is a great move for our students and families, and we are committed to providing timely information for a smooth transition," adds Peterson.
For more information contact Mankato Area Public Schools’ administrative offices at 507-387-1868.
Did you see the busing change for 2020-21?
After careful review and study about tiered busing in detail, the Mankato Area Public School Board approved this transportation model beginning in September for the 2020-2021 school year. Elementary students will be transported to schools first. As a result, they will start and dismiss early each school day. Middle and high school students will be transported on the second route so their school day will start and end later.
Through research, it’s been discovered there are many advantages to tiered busing:
• Research shows later start align with older students’ natural sleep cycles.
• Students spend less time on buses.
• Simplify—fewer transitions for students.
• Increased breakfast time for youth.
• Age-similar bus companions.
• Tiered busing is best fit to Mankato Area Public Schools’ size.
• Opens space for families who want to contract for busing.
• Routing options and flexibility.
• Positions district for future.
It’s an exciting opportunity to enhance school transportation for students and families. Activity directors and bus companies have been part of this process to ensure a smooth transition. Information and feedback learned from faculty and staff was very helpful. After-school care has also been taken into consideration. Furthermore, implementing tiered busing is a good fit for larger school districts and best positions Mankato Area Public Schools for continued growth.
