From the Principal's Desk
We've been having a lot of fun lately at lunchtime, watching World Cup games on the big screen in the cafeteria! Students have been enjoying the opportunity to cheer for their favorite teams and players. Thanks to our wonderful Day Custodian Mark Aguilar for hooking us up with a live feed. Students have also been enjoying meeting with their Big Buddy/Little Buddy classes -- some getting together to make their hats for Edison's Silly Hat Day on December 14 (next Wednesday).
On December 2, we hosted Learning Rounds with district visitors joining me, Assistant Principal Elizabeth Ipiña and Academic Coach Rocio Naranjo Badillo in visiting classrooms. Thanks to Elementary Executive Director Steve Richardson, Education Services' Naz Riquelme, Roosevelt Principal Linda Holeva, and Innovate Education Consultant Danelle Almaraz for joining us. During Learning Rounds, diverse teams visit classrooms looking for specific practices. In our case, we were looking for evidence of the Active Learning Strategies we've been working on in professional development and planning for in our Professional Learning Communities. These are strategies that represent best immersion practices and give students opportunities to process information and talk with peers about what they are learning, Active learning strategies also give students regular opportunities to use language to express their thinking. We saw great evidence that this is happening across grade levels and in a variety of disciplines. We also so lots of academic rigor and student engagement in learning! Thanks to our wonderful teachers who opened their classrooms for the walk: Lindsay Newman, Carolina Castillo, Karina Tejeda de León, Elizabeth Martínez, Denise Herrera, Camila Mejia and Carlos Morales. By the end of the year, all teachers will have participated in Learning Rounds both as "walkers" and as those who are visited. Having the opportunity to observe instruction and collaborate with peers in designing and strengthening instruction is some of the most powerful professional development we can provide.
As the year winds down, I want to take the opportunity acknowledge our Edison staff -- a really talented and committed group of individuals who come to work every day to make a positive difference in kids' lives. We've always had a strong staff at Edison, but this year's certificated and classified staff are truly some of the most talented, kind, and hardworking people I've ever had to pleasure to collaborate with. Thank you Team Edison!
We all want to wish your family a wonderful holiday season and a good winter break! It's been so nice to be able to have parents helping with field trips, volunteering in classrooms, and coming to campus for informances and meetings again. Many of you have shared that you are finally feeling comfortable enough to travel again and are heading away to visit with relatives that you haven't been able to connect with due to Covid. Whether you travel far or say home with friends and family here, we wish you health, joy, and an uplifting end to the year and here's to a healthier new year!

5th Grade Dance Performance
On Friday, December 16 at 8:45 am, the 5th graders will perform the choreography they've been learning to West Side Story. This will be the culmination of their 20-week unit of lessons with instructors from the Santa Monica Dance Academy. Please join us in the Edison cafetorium. 5th grade classes are planning a brief breakfast after the performance; your child's teacher or room representative will send details.
Teatro Informances in January
In the January Calendar you will see a series of Teatro Informances for Preschool through 3rd Grade classes. As our semester of theater classes with PS Arts and Maestra Martha Ramirez-Oropeza begins to draw to a close, the students have prepared some informances to show you what they've been learning in their theater classes this fall, Not only does theater develop another mode of learning but it develops creative expression, helps children become comfortable speaking in front of others and gives our immersion students another opportunity to express themselves in Spanish. Please join us if you can. Come a little early to sign in at the office and we'll give you a pass and direct you to the Theater Room. Typically the theater informances draw many parents and since they will be indoors in the theater room, we strongly encourage masking. The one thing we don't need to share is viruses!
4th and 5th grade plays will be coming next!
Health and Safety
Morning Parking at Virginia Avenue Park
Thanks to the efforts of the Edison Safety Committee, we've been able to clarify with staff at Virginia Avenue Park that between 8:00-11:00 am, Edison parents can park in one of the lots at Virginia Avenue Park if they have business at Edison. This should make it easier in the mornings to park and walk to campus, reducing the number of cars on our narrow streets in the morning. It will also make it easier for parents to attend morning meetings or volunteer in classrooms in the morning. Thank you to our partners at Virginia Avenue Park for supporting Edison in this way!
Health Precautions
Absences are high as we battle the triple threat of Covid, Flu, and RSV. Please make sure to use the Covid test kits distributed each Friday to check your student's health on Sunday night or Monday morning before returning to school. Watch for any symptoms associated not only with Covid but also symptoms that may indicate RSV or the Flu. All are extremely contagious and community transmission rates are high right now. Keeping students home when symptomatic is the best way to slow down the spread. Masking indoors is also a really good idea right now to protect against all three viruses. While Covid spreads primarily through the air, the RSV and influenza viruses can live on surfaces, utensils, and hands, making handwashing and sanitizing especially important.
We will be sending two test kits home with each child over winter break. Use one as needed over winter break but make sure to use one on Monday night January 2 or in the morning on January 3 befor your child returns to school. Transmission rates are very high in California right now and there is the possibility of returning to indoor masking rules if rates keep increasing. Thank you for taking precautions to keep students and staff healthy and able to attend school!
Emergency Contact Information
If your address, phone number, or email has changed, please notify Melina Garcia in the Edison office (310) 828-0335, etc. 61-348 or melinagarcia@smmusd.org. Your official contact information is what we have entered into the district student Information system (Aries), and we won't know about changes that you give may to your room representative, PTA or teachers. We use the information in Aries to send emergency calls, texts, emails, to send report cards, test scores, and to send other official notices from the district. Please enter the information of the person(s) in your family that we should notify in emergencies.
Remember that if you previously lived in Santa Monica and originally enrolled in Edison as a resident, if you have moved out of the district, you will need to go to your new home district and apply for an inter-district attendance permit. If you have questions about how to do this, please contact Jessica Hernandez at (310) 828-0335 ext. 61-306 or jessicahernandez@smmusd.org and she can assist you.
Finally, if you have shared custody, please make sure that we have updated copies of your custody orders so we know who is able to pick up your child and when. . We also recommend that parents with a shared custody agreement fill out separate emergency cards so that we have emergency contacts for both custodial parents in the event that you have an emergency and need to have someone else pick up your child on a day when you have custody.
