INDEPENDENCE FOR SINGAPORE

What did independence mean for Singapore?

THE RESPONSES AND FEELINGS OF PEOPLE WHO WENT THROUGH INDEPENDENCE

9 August 1965,the day when Singapore became independent.Politicians of PAP (People's action party) were disappointed because they believed in the merger and were fighting for Malaysia. They campaigned so hard for the merger during the Referendum. Most citizens were worried about Singapore's economic survival as Singapore is a small country and they were also curious about Singapore's ability to survive on its own. There were also citizen who felt sad as they have to choose their citizenship. But there were also citizens who felt happy about the news of Singapore independence and celebrate by firing crackers.

THE CHANGES/PROBLEMS THAT SINGAPORE WENT THROUGH AFTER INDEPENDENCE

Singapore faced many challenges after Singapore's independence. One of the challenges that Singapore faced was economics.Singapore is a small country with no natural resources. We do not have large lands to grow crops thus,Malaysia had been the main market for goods that were manufactured in Singapore. But,Malaysia imposed more taxes on these goods to protect its own industries after the separation.Singapore could not continue to depend mainly on entrepot trade for its economic development as trade was slowed down. Thus, the policy made it difficult for industries in Singapore to develop.

The second challenge that Singapore faced was security.Singapore was lacking of a strong defence force.Indonesia continued to carry out attacks on Singapore even after Singapore's independence. The lack of strong defence force would affect Singapore's economic development as security and stability in Singapore were important to attract foreign investments.

Another challenge that Singapore faced was mass unemployment.

When Singapore separate with Malaysia, the people need to choose their citizenship. Most of the people were to choose Malaysia as most of them were born in Malaysia. Thus, the government encouraged the people to take up Singapore citizenship.
