GHS Wins 2nd in District UIL Academics!

On March 21, 43 Gainesville High School students traveled to Argyle to compete in the Conference 4A District 9 Academics Meet. GHS students participated in every competition, winning second place overall based on performance in CX Debate, One Act Play, and the academic events on March 21.

GHS proudly received first place team in Journalism and also in Speech as well as qualifying seven individuals for Regionals for 9 different contests. Individual regional qualifiers are: Evan Cook (Computer Apps), Jacqueline Thomas (Editorial Writing, Feature Writing, News Writing, & Ready Writing), Lily Kemp (Feature Writing), Tucker Craft (Informative Speaking & LD Debate), Harmony Rutherford (News Writing), Niaomi Dawson (Poetry Interpretation), Jake Conner (Prose Interpretation).

GHS Debate Teams Compete at State

Four GHS students competed at the State CX debate contest March 15-17 in Austin. GHS teams placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at the District 9 competition in February, sweeping the competition and taking both State qualifying spots to Austin.

Edison

On Monday morning, Edison Elementary first graders enjoyed a visit from Cathy's Critters, where they had a hands on learning experience with a variety of animals including a kangaroo, baby goat, python, sugar glider, macaw, and more! Cathy’s Critters helped launch their excitement for the upcoming first grade animal class research project. Monday was also pajama day in honor of Dr. Seuss Week and the "The Sleep Book".

Girls Powerlifting: 14th in STATE!

The Gainesville Lady Leopards powerlifting season came to an end at the Extraco Events Center in Waco Texas on March 17. We had three girls compete at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association State Championships. Yelena Martinez finished in 16th place with a total of 570 pounds. Yelena was also named to the second team academic All-State Team. Kallie Brandom-Flowers finished 13th with a total of 880 pounds. Jazmin Tejeda brought home a silver medal finishing in 2nd place with at total of 800 pounds. Jazmin was also named to the elite academic All-State team and was also the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship that was voted on by the regional directors. Lupe Rodriguez was State Alternate. These young ladies along with the rest of the team competed extremely hard this year and did an outstanding job of representing Gainesville and GHS!

Boys Win Regional Powerlifting!

The Gainesville Leopards powerlifting team competed at the Region 6 Divison 2 powerlifting meet at Weatherford High School on March 10th. The guys did an outstanding job of competing and representing Gainesville and GHS. 17 boys had the opportunity to compete. Along with a first place team trophy, many medals were won and new PR’s set and five advance to STATE!

Thank you Education Foundation!

Thanks to a grant through the Gainesville Education Foundation, Mrs. Watson's Art Club has started their project of rock painting. These rocks will be transformed into works of art and placed around the City of Gainesville for citizens to find!
