Multi-sensory Approach
A multi-sensory approach means engaging more than one sense (touch, sight, smell, hearing, taste) in your lesson plan. The more senses you can engage the better. Why does this approach work? Your brain has many different pathways that help you retain information and make sense of the world that you live in. There is a pathway for visual learning, a pathway for auditory learning, and so on. When you only engage one pathway of your brain, your body only has one way of trying to store and remember new information. When you engage all of your senses, all of the areas of your brain are engaged, so your body has multiple ways of storing and remembering new information. Your brain is also like a muscle. What happens to your body when you exercise? You’re stronger, your muscles get larger, and you become faster. Your brain works in the same way. The more you use certain areas of the brain, the larger they get, the stronger they are, and the faster they are at making connections.
Theorist of the Month
Jean Piaget
How to include Piaget's theory in your classroom:
The art of applying Piaget's theories in your program is in making children's experiences hands-on and concrete. Remember that children need to explore the nature of things through trial and error.
- Introduce unusual materials to encourage exploration.
- Add aluminum foil and flashlights to the block area. How can you use these with the blocks?
- Encourage children to talk about changes they notice when manipulating objects.
- Invite children to learn more about the world through field studies and trips.

Teacher Spotlight
Miss Donna and Miss Cara
Batavia, OH
Miss Donna and Miss Cara are the Preschool teachers at Batavia Rainbow. They are a dynamic duo, and they rock the classroom together with well planned learning activities, teaching and modeling appropriate interactions, and displaying the children's work both in the classroom on the evidence of education boards and in their portfolios. They are frequently heard singing to the class's favorite tunes, and the children are their biggest fans!
