Stone Bank School
Reaching Out, September 25, 2015
From the Principal
Dear Stone Bank Families:
I can hardly believe that we've nearly finished the month of September! It's been a great first few weeks of the school year. I'm enjoying getting to know all of you and your children.
Recently, I attended the first PTO meeting of the school year. The PTO board has a number of activities and fundraisers planned for this school year. If you are looking for a way to become involved in our school community, I hope you will consider attending a few meetings and perhaps helping out with one of the events planned for this year. Your participation is needed and valued. If your schedule only allows for a couple of hours a year that's OK! Many hands make for light work! The next meeting is Monday, October 12th at 6:30PM in the SB library.
Have a great weekend!
Mrs. Davies

"BuckSkinners" Field Trip
Our fifth graders learned that tipis had air vents at the top to allow smoke to escape from them as the fire was the main source of heat. When raining, or pouring, as it did on Thursday and Friday evenings, they learned that the tipi’s vent could be angled to keep the rain out and the smoke out as well. The buffalo hides that many of the kids sat on were parts of the natives beds that had wood as their frames. The students also learned that sometimes inside the tipis there were colors like red, blue, yellow, and white and it showed what tribe they represented. Some students learned that it took 2 hours to put up a tipi and that sometimes natives hung the horsetails of past horses on their tipis out of respect and honor for their horses. They also learned that the tipi has an inner liner that allows it to insulate and keep the heat in or the heat from the outside out. This same theory was learned about wool, which kept settlers warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Many of the settlers demonstrated knitting or crocheting and some of the kids purchased products made by settlers. Fifth grade students saw presentations on how scarves were dyed.
The kids found out that beeswax was mighty handy and was used by the blacksmith to coat metals and make them shiny after heating the fire to 2000-3000 degrees to bend the metal. The wax was also used to make candles that several of the children had opportunities to make. Many of our kids had the cool opportunity to throw a tomahawk into a round piece of tree, which they learned took skill or perhaps luck. Wigwams were built with tender trees so that they could be bent and the refined art of hunting, crafts and steel work impressed many students. Kids learned that rabbits were often trapped for food and that animal droppings were used once dry to build fires. Starting a fire was also something kids got to watch and learned how long it might take to get a fire started. We all learned a lot and the teacher is grateful for the tons of hands on learning that will be a great precursor for our unit on the Plains Indians:)
