2020-2021 School District Budget and Program Planning
Last week, we shared the following letter with all district staff on plans for the 2020-2021 school year compensation and continued progress on Universal Design for Learning. As noted, we are excited about our progress to date and appreciative of the staff contributions and hard work toward development and implementation of learning practices that focus on student success.
Greetings ECSD Staff,
I am happy to report recently agreed upon plans for the 2020-21 district budget and continued progress toward our district goal of bringing all employee group salaries in line with the market average of the previously agreed upon comparable districts. I am also pleased to share with you the next steps in our district’s ongoing effort to provide equity in education through Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approach as we can continue to strengthen our efforts to better serve our diversity of learners.
On Saturday, January 25, 2020, the Board held the annual ECSD budget retreat. This retreat entailed discussion regarding the district’s revenue limit, current year budget status, forecast of the 2020-2021 budget, and overall state of staffing and instructional service delivery. The Administrative Team and the Board reaffirmed their joint commitment to ensure that Evansville’s compensation is comparable and fair for all employees to the greatest degree possible given our current fiscal position. As such, the Board is supportive of the following for the 2020-21 budget:
- Funding the salary schedules for the Certified Staff employee group at 55 percent of the previously determined market comparable average while providing movement through the salary schedule based upon years of service.
- Funding the Administration employee group at 55 percent based on previously determined market comparable average.
- Funding the salary schedules for the Clerical and Specialist employee groups at 100 percent based on the previously determined market comparable average (Custodians, Food Service, and Support Staff were funded at 100 percent in 2019-2020).
- Increasing the district Buildings and Grounds department FTE by 1.0 in 2020-2021.
In response to feedback we have received and in order to provide greater support for teachers in the classroom as we pursue equity and implementation of UDL, the Administrative Team informed the Board of the following staff restructuring for 2020-2021 school year. The summary of restructuring, with full support of the Board, is as follows:
· While maintaining intervention positions at both grades K-2 and 3-5, elimination of one K-2 Reading/Math/Advanced Learning Interventionist; creation and hiring of a K-12 UDL Math Coach position.
· While maintaining adequate classroom section sizes, elimination of one K-5 classroom section position; creation and hiring of a K-5 UDL Math Coach.
· Redefine duties of grades 3-5 Reading/Math/Advanced Learning Interventionist to K-5 UDL Literacy Coach.
· Redefine duties of grades 6-8 Reading Interventionist to 6-12 UDL Literacy Coach.
Please direct questions regarding the budget and finances to Jamie Merath, Business Manager and questions regarding staff restructuring to Scott Everson, Director of Curriculum & Instruction.
On behalf of the full Administrative Team and the Board, I want to thank all of you for your energy and your ongoing commitment to educating our students. We appreciate the efforts you have invested in continuing to ‘exceed expectations,’ and into initiatives such as getting the new K-5 math resources up and running, our commitment to highest quality literacy instruction for all K-12 students, and ongoing work creating and communicating learning targets across all K-12 curricula. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jerry Roth

Curriculum & Instruction
Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
We are always trying to get better and do better for our students and their learning. One particular educational framework that has become internationally popular in recent years, that we have embraced here in Evansville, is the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approach.
So what is UDL? Think about this example:
When architects and builders plan the construction of a new building, they design that building with all types of people and all types of abilities in mind. They install ramps, corridors, doorways, etc., that are usable for all people. Well UDL in education is no different: we believe our curriculum (what we teach and how we teach it) should, from the outset, be designed to accommodate all kinds of learners. There is just no such thing as an “average” or “typical” learner – while acknowledging just that, we are striving to be more deliberate in the teaching and learning process in the classroom for all learners.
In addition to providing professional learning opportunities and workshops for our staff this past year, we will be restructuring some staffing to help with our UDL implementation. Without adding any new cost to our budget, we have restructured three current interventionist positions to be UDL Literacy and UDL Math Coaches next school year. Additionally, we are eliminating one interventionist position and creating a K-12 UDL Math Coach position. We believe the general education classroom is the most critical point of instruction for all learners, and we believe our staff restructuring better supports our general education teachers in ensuring optimal student learning.
If you have any questions at all related to UDL, ECSD curricula, and/or student learning, please do not hesitate to contact Scott Everson, Director of Curriculum & Instruction, at eversons@evansville.k12.wi.us or via phone at 608-882-3382.

Harassement and Bullying Presentation:
On Thursday morning, January 30, 2020, all middle school and high school students attended a presentation on harassment and bullying at the Performing Arts Center. The presentation was created by the District’s legal counsel, Tess O’Brien-Heinzen. High School Principal, Jason Knott, co-presented with Ms. O'Brien-Heinzen to the high school students while Middle School Principal, Joanie Dobbs, and Dean of Students, Darren Demmin, co-presented to the middle school students.
Ms. O’Brien-Heinzen began the presentation by discussing "tough topics" which included spreading rumors, making hurtful comments or gestures, engaging in inappropriate conduct, sending texts/messages meant to intimidate or embarrass and posting on social media embarrassing or degrading messages or photos of someone. Bullying and unlawful harassment definitions were explained and that it may occur through conduct, written and verbal comments, pictures, social media posts, texts, and other methods of electronic messaging. Sexual harassment was defined and was differentiated from flirting. She also discussed the state and federal laws prohibiting bullying and harassment. Mr. Knott, Mrs. Dobbs and Mr. Demmin focused on District policies which prohibit harassment and bullying and explained to students how to report such behavior and the process used by the District for investigating and addressing it.
The presentation ended reminding students of the following:
- their words, actions and conduct matter
- respect is important on and offline
- online bullying and harassment travel fast
- messages, pictures, videos, etc. don't go away
- everyone deserves respect
- if it makes you uncomfortable, don't do it
- don't stay silent
Thank you to Ms. Tess O'Brien-Heinzen for coming to ECSD to help us further educate our students and staff on bullying and harassment.

Student Connectedness Survey
Building positive relationships with kids is essential to their growth and progress and student engagement and connectedness are priorities at EHS. In November, I shared how we had surveyed students in October to help us better identify the needs of our school community.
Our Building Leadership Team analyzed this information, after which it was shared with all staff. The survey was on topics such as safety, connections with peers and adults, and a variety of other topics relevant to our students.
The results of this survey are being used to enhance the overall high school experience for our students at the building and classroom level based upon the student feedback collected.
We will be administering a mid-year survey in early February. More to come!

JC McKenna Middle School - Mrs. Dobbs, Principal
Families of JC McKenna,
Students and staff had a great end of first semester. The half day was filled with team building activities. Students were able to use their PBIS tickets to purchase end of the quarter celebrations. There were a variety of activities to choose from ranging from bowling to watching a movie. We hope that everyone enjoyed their selected activity. Students are already earning more tickets to use through third quarter to purchase some snacks, "buy" an activity or to put into a drawing for gift cards. The remainder of the half day was spent on the ski hill for 3 busloads of students at Cascade. Thank you to Mr. Bethke for continuing to organize this opportunity and also to Mrs. Jorgensen for sorting and organizing all of the forms.
Second semester is in full swing. Grades from first semester have been posted and are accessible through Family Access in Skyward. Remember that Art, Tech Ed and Computers run on a trimester so you will not see a final grade for the class your child is currently in. 8th grade will have a final grade for Art, 7th will have a final grade for Tech Ed and 6th grade will have a final grade for Computers.
Thank you for sharing your kids with us each day!

Theodore Robinson Intermediate School, Ms. Barb Dorn, Principal
The final installation in the TRIS entrance was completed over winter break. Look closely and you will see the district logo of Exceeding Expectations 1+.
Have you ever wondered what the “1+” in the ECSD logo means?
The Evansville Community School District strives to exceed student achievement expectations each and every day. The number “1” in the logo represents the expected one year annual growth for each student each year.
The “+” represent our vision of exceeding the one year expected annual growth. We provide a positive learning environment that challenges all students to achieve personal excellence and become contributing citizens of the world community.
"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” ~ Aristotle
New Artwork
TRIS students continue to contribute their talents to pieces of art to fill our new front entrance. Mrs Marshall puts in the lettering and the students add the patterns and splashes of color. Please check them out the next time you are at Theodore Robinson. They are truly amazing!
Our changing landscape
Schools are very different these days. Most of the learning is done between the hours of 8am and 3pm. It is extremely important that your child is at school as much as possible because the work can’t just be sent home with your child to make-up. We expect kids to work hard when they are here with us and understand that after school they need time to play and engage with their family. Therefore, you won’t see a lot of school work come home with your child. Our new curriculums are rigorous and require materials and supports that cannot be sent home. However, we do need your help to support your child’s love of reading!
How will your child become a better reader? By READING, READING, READING!
What can you do? The best thing you can do to help your child to be successful at school and in life is to create the expectation in your home, that reading is done for 20-30 minutes each evening including weekends. Your child will grow as a reader and writer from this additional nightly practice. Be sure that your child is doing most of the reading. Asking your child to tell you about what they are reading, will help build their comprehension skills.
Need books or ideas? Please let your child’s teacher know. We are happy to help!
Ten Benefits of Reading
1. Kids who read often and widely get better at it.
2. Reading exercises our brains strengthening connections and building new ones.
3. Reading improves concentration.
4. Reading teaches children about the world around them by exposing them to people, places and events outside their own experience.
5. Reading improves a child’s vocabulary, leads to more highly-developed language skills and improves the child's ability to write well.
6. Reading develops a child’s imagination.
7. Reading helps kids develop empathy.
8. Children who read do better at school in all subjects and all the way through school.
9. Reading is a great form of entertainment.
10. Reading relaxes the body and calms the mind.
Pie Celebration - TRIS Style!
The students and staff at TRIS were sent into Winter Break with some mess and excitement! Since the school reached their goal for collecting canned goods, all gathered to watch Ms. Dorn and Ms. Frisque take a pie to the face. Thank you staff and students at TRIS for collecting for others in need! And a big thank you to Ms. Dorn and Ms. Frisque for showing their #ECSDPride, as messy as it was!
On display at TRIS
The new display case at TRIS is full of monsters from the imaginations of our 3rd Graders. Students used a pinch pot technique to start and other hand-building techniques to add the detail to their monsters.
Mr. Bennett put on his “monster face” and joined in the fun.
H.E.R.O.E.S.
H.E.R.O.E.S. groups met on January 24th and fun was had by all! Our own versions of Telephone, Drawing Telephone and HedBanz filled our time with laughter and smiles.

Showdown at Conservation Canyon
Thank you to WPPI Energy and the National Theater for Children for presenting Showdown at Conservation Canyon on January 31st for the LEVI and TRIS Students.
The story opens in Dodge Ball City, where Sheriff Carrie Gooper is faced with a problem. The notorious Ron of the Cons has challenged Sheriff Gooper to a showdown at high noon! But that’s not all – it seems people are wasting energy all over town as well!
Eager to change the city from their wasting ways, Carrie enlists the help of her friends to get to the bottom of this dilemma and to help back her up at the showdown. They inform her about the uses of energy and how electricity and energy are made. However, everyone is too afraid of Ron of The Cons, so Carrie takes it upon herself to meet Ron alone.
After a nerve-racking introduction, Ron informs Carrie that conserving energy is important and that all he wanted to do was help her change the town’s wasting habits. After helping Carrie learn about ways we can conserve energy, Ron appoints Carrie as an official deputy, and peace and order are restored in Dodge Ball City.

COMMON COLD VS INFLUENZA
School Nurse Contact:
Abbey Tway, RN BSN

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COLD AND INFLUENZA?
Influenza and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses that have similar symptoms, but are caused by different viruses. It can be difficult to tell the difference between a cold and flu based on symptoms alone. In general, influenza is worse than the common cold, and symptoms are more common and intense. Colds are usually milder than influenza. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospitalizations. Influenza can have very serious associated complications.
HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF & MY CHILD FROM INFLUENZA?
ANNUAL INFLUENZA VACCINE
CDC recommends an annual flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against flu viruses.
Everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine.
IT’S NOT TOO LATE!
STOP THE SPREAD OF GERMS
Avoid close contact with other sick people
Keep your child home if they are sick
Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze
WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN WITH SOAP AND WATER FOR AT LEAST 20 SECONDS
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
ILLNESS REMINDERS:
Please report any confirmed cases of contagious illness to the school office. These may include any of the following:
Influenza
Strep
Impetigo
Hand, Foot, Mouth Disease
Mononucleosis
Pink Eye
Ringworm
If possible, please provide a medical note from a medical provider if your child was seen due to illness.
Please contact me with any questions!

ECSD Athletics & Activities
Winter sports are in the middle of their seasons. They are competing at a high level in the Rock Valley Conference. Here is a brief summary of each program and the accomplishments they have reached thus far.
BOYS BASKETBALL
The Blue Devil Boys Basketball Program has enjoyed a great start to the season. In a very competitive Rock Valley Conference, the Blue Devils are in the top half of the conference standings at the mid-way point of the season.
This past Saturday, the Blue Devils finished off the non-conference portion of their season with a 58-44 win against Dodgeville. In their four non-conference games this season, the Blue Devils finished with 3 wins and 1 loss.
The coaching staff is proud of the growth and improvement that all student-athletes within the program have made so far this year and believe that the best is yet to come. For more updates and results for the Blue Devil Boys Basketball teams, please follow them on Twitter @BlueDevilBBB.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
The varsity girls basketball team is wrapping up the 1st round of RVC games this week (January 13-17th). The Blue Devils currently sit alone in 1st place, with a record of 7-1 in conference play. Their overall record is 8-4. Evansville has played some tough competition in their non-conference schedule, and have lost to Oregon, Dodgeville, and Janesville Craig. Evansville did beat Milton, which is a non-conference opponent. Evansville’s only loss in conference play was to Jefferson. The Blue Devils will look to avenge that loss in a couple of weeks as they will play each conference team twice.
Paige Banks leads the conference in scoring, and Josey Rinehart currently is 3rd in the conference for scoring. The varsity team is very well balanced, and they work hard on a consistent basis in order to make everyone better.
WRESTLING
We are off to a good start as we continue to learn, grow and focus on team cohesion. We have a competitive conference and will see many of the top conference teams as we compete this Saturday in the Rock Valley Conference Duals.

VARSITY POMS
The Evansville Varsity Pom and Dance team is halfway through an awesome season! The team has been busy working hard to clean their competition routine which they will take (they took) to the WACPC Regional Dance Championship on January 25th, 2020 at Watertown High School in Watertown, Wisconsin. The team hopes to place at the Regionals Competition and continue on to the State Competition. WACPC State Dance Championships will take place (took place) on February 1st, 2020 at the La Crosse Civic Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Finally, tryouts for the EHS Fall Varsity Pom and Dance team will take place in June and are open to any current 8th-11th graders.
CHEER
The Basketball Cheer season has been great so far. With only one returning basketball cheerleader out of ten, the team has learned a lot of content to cheer for their games: 36 sideline chants, 16 cheers, 11 8-count dance routines, jumps and stunts. Their technique is improving as the season moves along through the season and they are also making a lot of progress with their stunting skills. They have moved past basic cheer stunts, elevators, shoulder sits and extensions and are now working on basket tosses, full downs and liberties. Keep up the great work!
VOCAL JAZZ

This winter we held a “Candy Grams” fundraiser to raise money for World Bicycle Relief, and our next fundraiser is a bake sale for SizaBantwana. SizaBantwana supports orphaned children in South Africa and helps them stay in school. We have student pen pals through this organization and have enjoyed the intercultural exchange with each letter that is sent. A huge thank you to the GEP Board who regularly meets before school to keep everything running smoothly and to the TRIE for all their hard work!
