January 2015 Meeting
Event Chairs needed!
- Mother/Son night: Traditionally held in the fall, but set the date when it works for you! This is a great event that brings in many many families to spend quality time together as well as raising funds for PTSA. Use our past "minute to win it" and craft format entirely, as a jumping off point, or add your own spin to things.
- Square 1 Art: This is a terrific fundraiser for the art department. All profits go directly to putting new technology and supplies into our kids' art rooms. We are currently looking for a co-chair to help this fundraiser run smoothly.
- PTSA Newsletter and Community Flyer: We are also looking for someone who may be interested in writing up our monthly flyer. With the new online format, this is a great way to get involved from home! A little time each month can help spread the word to all our members and parents about what's happening with PTSA and the local community.
- Summer Book Swap: This event is very easy to run, free of cost to kids and encourages summer reading.

A message from Vernon Tenney, Canandaigua Academy Principal
If you are an Academy parent you may have read this in the Academy's Newsletter. Vernon Tenney came to our November meeting and shared this information with us, and we think it's important to get the word out.
Social Media – the nasty side.
We have had a few students approach staff about a new app called After School. The makers of the app state it is for “Funny Anonymous School News For Confessions & Compliments”. The icon that appears to the right is cute and might attract young users. This cannot be further from the truth. It is an app to post anything about anyone be it true, false, complementary, hurtful, flattering or vile. I believe anonymous commenting serves one purpose – to hurt others. Our staff have been addressing issues as they become aware. However, we need your help. Please speak with your child to see if they have downloaded this app. If they have, I ask you to have them remove it from their device. We need to work together to break this unhealthy cycle.
We know it is incredibly overwhelming to keep up with online behavior and the growth of new apps. It is an incredibly daunting task. Please remember to check your child’s device often and talk with them about healthy online/social media behaviors.
If you find your child is dealing with an inappropriate response or interaction on social media, please respond as we are as a school. These come from recommendations from NetSmartz.
- Avoid responding
- Save the evidence
- Report misuse to the app
- Talk about it with a trusted adult
- Be a bystander with power and support victims
The following is taken directly from NetSmartz. More information is available athttp://www.netsmartz.org/Parents
We also encourage you to do the following to help children use social networking sites safely. Social networking sites can have many benefits for children, such as allowing them to explore new interests. Help your children use them more safely by going over the following tips and discussion starters.
- Check your child’s friend lists to see who has access to his or her profile. Make sure your child knows all friends in person.
- Teach your child to set profiles to private–but be aware that privacy settings do not guarantee complete privacy.
- Have your child remove any inappropriate content and photos and delete any personal information.
- Check the profiles of your child’s friends to see if there is revealing information or photos about your child.
- Report inappropriate or criminal behavior to the appropriate authority. Most sites have a reporting mechanism for non-criminal behavior. Criminal behavior should be reported through law-enforcement agencies and the CyberTipline® atwww.cybertipline.com.
Start a discussion with your child
Use these discussion starters to get an Internet safety conversation going with your children. The more often you talk to them about online safety, the easier it will get, so don’t get discouraged if they don’t respond immediately!
- Could you show me your online profile(s)?
- Do you use your real name or age when communicating with others online?
- What kinds of things do your post on your page?
- How do you decide who to add as a friend?
- Would you feel comfortable if I checked your profile?
