First Grade News: Exploring Wild Animals
Irving First Graders are excited to start Project Based Learning (PBL) this Spring! PBL helps students gain knowledge, deeper understanding, and success skills as they explore a meaningful question.
Our First Graders are exploring, “How do animal habitats help wild animals survive?” Students explored what it means to be camouflaged by creating a moth and hiding it around the classroom to see if it could be spotted. Students also brainstormed the difference between domestic animals and wild animals. Each student picked a wild animal that they were interested in learning more about.
As the First Graders research their animals in library and computer lab, they will complete an “Animal Report” booklet and diorama. Each student will design a presentation on their wild animals by sharing their findings from their “Animal Report” and diorama.
To finalize the PBL project, First Graders are excited to go to the zoo in May. Students will then further explore how wild animals live. They may even find their wild animal at the zoo and see how the zoo has created a unique habitat suitable for each wild animal. We are very excited about this project!

Candy Bar Sales a Success
Many students were randomly selected to win prizes for selling candy bars. Top selling students also earned a trip to McDonald's to eat lunch with Mr. Everett! Thank you to everyone who sold or bought candy bars for this successful fundraiser!
4th Grade Parents
Parents,
The fourth grade will begin State Assessment Testing next week and continue on through the first weeks of April. We want the children to be as successful as possible, so we are asking that you help us by making sure your student is in class, having had a great night of rest and a high protein breakfast so their brains have plenty of rest and fuel to face the challenge! We have worked all year preparing for this, we know they will do their best. You may send them notes of encouragement if you wish, they will be allowed to put them in their Testing Encouragement Books so they can look at them before their tests. Our classes will also have support and encouragement from "Buddy K-2 Classes". They are looking forward to encouraging the 3-5 grade students as they begin testing. Thank you for all you do to support your child and his/her teacher. Irving parents and students ROCK!

News From Mrs. Bogner 2nd Grade
This year Mrs. Bogner’s 2nd grade class had the opportunity to adopt a class in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade to adopt in order to be supportive for upcoming state assessments.
With Mrs. Hillebrand’s class having 17 students and our class having 17, it was a perfect match. Mrs. Bogner’s class has been busy making a poster to encourage the 5th graders. The poster is to be hung in the cafeteria next week. Also, the 2nd grade students have been busy making posters for the 5th grader’s doorway in addition to some other surprises the test takers will receive the week their testing begins. (May 28th)
Mrs. Bogner’s class has had a hands-on learning experience with hatching eggs in an incubator. So far, 2 baby chicks have been born and the class has been enjoying learning about the life-cycle of a chicken.

Art Display at Baden Square
Irving 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders walked to Baden Square Arts and Humanities Council Gallery to view their art work on display. They had fun finding their art piece and the art work of their friends. There are a lot of very art talented students in Irving! The display will remain up until April 5th.
Next year the kindergarten, first and second grade art will be on display.
Ms. Strange's Classroom Has a Sneaky Visitor!
Ms. Strange here to share some exciting and fun science STEM activity that 2nd grade worked so hard on! They were given a task to create leprechaun traps to help keep that sneaky, stealthy, and magical little guy trapped! They used household materials and began brainstorming ideas with their classmates. They discovered what leprechauns like best so that they could lure him in and catch him!
Boy oh boy were those 2nd graders close to catching Shaymus O' Sullivan! Very close to being trapmasters...........until that day we set up our traps in hopes Shaymus would come back to our room to visit and HE DID! Not only did he visit, he destroyed their traps and hard work! He flipped desks in the classroom and took all of their gold! Their traps were clever but not as clever as he is!
Only two gold coins were left. The leprechaun had not only escaped but he was rich with gold too! Ms. Strange's class really enjoyed collaborating with a partner, bringing materials and putting their ideas into one!
He left goodies for them and all of their trouble they went through to build the traps! They enjoyed a green leprechaun cake and goodie bags that helped them celebrate their hard work!
We are also making signs for the outdoor area of 3-5 to give them affirmation and encouragement for their upcoming State Assessments! We know they will rock it!
Mrs. Dougherty's 2nd Grade News
Students have been working hard and giving great effort in all they do, Mrs. Taylor (our student teacher) and I are incredibly proud of them! Mrs. Taylor has been a wonderful addition to the class and will make a fantastic teacher. In math, regrouping, multiplication, and now onto graphing and money have been skills students have been learning about. The class enjoyed multiplication and have been learning to make graphs. In reading these next several weeks, our focus is on Making a Difference: How can people make a difference, including expanding vocabulary, phonics sounds, and reading fluently.
We are gearing up for encouraging a class of 4th graders to Rock the Test - as state assessments begin the week of March 28th. For the past several months, my class has been working with Master Patrolman McDonald with a community outreach project. Our class draws pictures and cards for residents at Winfield Senior Living Community.
We are excited about what these last months of school will bring....beginning our One Book, One School book - The Boxcar Children, walking field trips, coding, planting in the Outdoor Classroom, and so much more!
