Biography of Franz Kafka

Early Life and Employment

-Born into a German-speaking Jewish family on July 3, 1883

-Complained about his father's harsh nature, which heavily influenced his writing

-Excelled at school, later trained to be a lawyer at the University of Prague, which gave him time to study other prospects

-Started to write short novels while working at an Italian insurance company, also part of the Prague Circle

-He soon resigned and started working for an accident insurance company which offered flexible hours for him to write


Personal Life and Health

-Exposed to hardship ever since he was a young boy

-Two younger brothers died

-Father was relentless and controlling

-While in a student club in college, he met Max Brod, a friend that would prove important with his literary works

-In an unsuccessful relationship with Felice Bauer

-Later fell in love with Dora Dymant

-Contracted tuberculosis in 1917, although he was under constant stress beforehand

-Died in Vienna on June 23, 1924


Writing and Historical Significance

-Known for his collection of short stories

-Earliest published books were in 1908

-Max Brod was his literary executor

-In 1912, he wrote "The Judgement" in one night and also wrote "The Metamorphosis" the same year

-Feature existentialism, socialism, and Marxism elements

-Many of his stories feature bizarre scenarios

-He burned much of his work

-His final request was for his dear friend Max Brod to burn all of his works once he died, however, Max Brod decided to publish them instead

-"Kafkaesque" is used to describe something similar to concepts of his work, specifically "The Metamorphosis" and "The Trial"

-Much of his personal life influenced his writing

-Many characters mimicked resisting a powerful force, like his father

-Political views also effected his literature
