We are going to the zoo...zoo..zoo..how about you..you..you?
As you can imagine, the big focus this week was our trip to the Singapore Zoo! It is amazing, no matter how many times the children have been to this magical place, they still get excited to go - especially when accompanied by their good friends and community of wonderful parents from SJIIES. The prep children were very busy in the classrooms, writing letters to the zoo and preparing their research questions for the big trip. They also began working on a shared collaborative ibook to put their animal discoveries in. We have been very busy beavers!
As part of our IPC unit 'Amazing Animals' the children looked at the work of Henri Rousseau, a French Post-Impressionist painter. Their main focus of this study was to learn about one of his most famous works, Tiger in a Tropical Storm. We discussed this medium, closely observing the attention to detail, the sensation that the rain created, and how we feel when we see the tiger emerging from the over-grown greenery. We even had a go at doing our own masterpiece!
In Jolly Phonics we focused on the digraph /Ww/ and /Zz/ and the Magic 100 words, /if/ and /up/. In Mathematics we looked at simple addition and subtraction, using both workbooks tied to our unit of work, as well as hands-on manipulatives. We also worked in small groups with the ipads to work out simple math problems. Our budding mathematicians are making excellent progress!
