Site Security Assessment
Hello Dragon Families!
Our school recently participated in a Site Security Assessment with the district's Safety and Security Coordinator. This is something all schools in our district are doing to make sure we are doing everything we can to provide a safe and secure learning environment. Staff at JDAL work diligently to provide the safest possible environment, but this site assessment did reveal some areas where we can improve. We will implement the changes immediately and continue to communicate with you regarding our safety policies.
IDENTIFICATION
- All students and staff must wear their photo ID throughout the day. Despite being a small school where everyone knows everyone else, we want to make sure that JDAL students are easily identifiable. We often have visitors in the building, so this will also help them identify our students easily. With the new school located on the first two floors, and additional people responsible for opening the outside doors, this will also ensure that only JDAL students are allowed into the building.
LOCKED DOORS
- The school doors on the third floor will now be locked throughout the day. When you arrive to school, please ring the buzzer outside of door #4 to announce yourself. After being buzzed in, take the stairs (or elevator for parents) to the third floor where the door will be opened for you. If you happen to enter the building with someone else, or when someone from the school downstairs is at the door, you will need to ring the new doorbell on the third floor for entrance. Please do your best to ring the buzzer outside of door #4 on the first floor so we know you are here and can let you in.
- Classroom doors will also be locked throughout the day, although they will not be closed. Due to our school-wide flexible seating, our entire floor is considered one big classroom. However, having the doors in the locked position will provide additional security in the event of a lockdown.
These are the biggest changes, but we do have current practices in place that will continue. Our school practices the required safety drills: 7 fire drills, 2 tornado drills, and 2 security drills (evacuation to our rally points). We also conduct an ALICE refresher and a When/Then Scenario every month where students provide responses to a fictional safety situation. If you would like more information about these scenarios, please contact me.
Thank you for being a dragon! We appreciate you and we believe in you.
With gratitude,
Jen + the JDAL Staff

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER
November 28: Poverty Simulation @ YWCA (1-3p)
Have you ever wondered or perhaps experienced poverty? There are many obstacles to overcome that people might know nothing about. Here is a great opportunity for you to learn more about poverty as well an opportunity to share with others what poverty looks like.
On Wednesday November 28th, the UW-Extension is offering a Poverty Simulation Activity.
Poverty is a reality for many individuals and families. But unless you've experienced poverty, it's difficult to truly understand. The poverty simulation bridges that gap from misconception to understanding. It is an interactive immersion experience. It sensitizes community participants to the realities of poverty. During the simulation, participants role-play a month in poverty and experience challenges faced by low-income families.
The Poverty Simulation will be held at the YWCA, 203 Madison St. 1:00-3:00---please arrive at 12:45.
If you would like to attend as a group, please contact Ms. Becky: lbeckyann@gmail.com by Tues. Nov. 27th.
December 13:
The Vietnam Seminar students are selling gift cards to Texas Roadhouse to raise money for their Washington, DC trip. The gift cards are available in $5 increments and will be ready for our Dine to Donate night on December 13th. These make great stocking stuffers and you can support a great cause! We will accept cash or checks made out to JDAL. Thank you!

The next round of student-led conferences is less than a month away. Please review your schedules in preparation for sign up which begins December 7th.
