Get your OverDrive on!
Hello, OverDrive!
SLS is pleased to welcome Newark CSD and Dundee CSD to OverDrive!
This summer, SLS (Kate, Ryan & Teresa) attended an OverDrive end user conference, Digipalooza. Also in attendance was Penn Yan elementary librarian, Rachel Knapton, as well as our library colleagues at Pioneer Library System! OverDrive hosts a fantastic conference, full of inspiring ideas and uses for e-books, audio books and video streaming in the libarary and in classrooms: https://digipalooza.com/
OverDrive announced some new changes, including their merger with Rakuten, a global e-commerce and Internet company based in Tokyo. Additionally, public library patrons are now encouraged to use the Libby app, which has greater functionality for end users.
On the school side of OverDrive, the development team advised that a new website and app for school library users, Sora, will be released in the upcoming school year. Additionally, OverDrive is working to implement Google single sign on for student and faculty accounts. For more information about OverDrive and Sora, please read a recent OverDrive blog: http://blogs.overdrive.com/schools/2017/09/19/why-overdrive-why-now/
OverDrive patron information:
For 2017-2018, SLS has implemented changes to the patron import and export process within the W-FL BOCES OverDrive shared collection. In a continued effort to ensure security and privacy of student data, SLS has worked with Edutech to access data feeds that come directly from each district's Student information System (SIS). Not only will this process ensure continued compliance of data security regulations, it alleviates the need for individual librarians to manage patron data.
Moving forward, OverDrive patron data will be updated on monthly schedule; if you need patrons to be added, please contact Ryan, who will work to fulfill your requests in a timely fashion. Please be advised of the new patron request proccess:
- Check to make sure that the student or faculty member has an account in your SIS
- If students or faculty are not in the SIS, please request that your district tech staff add them into the SIS. Once they have been added into the SIS, please contact Ryan to request an update of your school's OverDrive patron data
- If students or faculty are already in the SIS, please contact Ryan to request an update of your school's OverDrive patron data.
Adding to the W-FL BOCES Shared Collection
Please note, that the titles you select for the shared collection are NOT for individual Advantage collections, and can be accessed by students and staff in all 14 districts. Advantage collections require separate login credentials, and are managed by individual school libraries. If you are interested in learning more about creating an Advantage collection, please contact Kate or Teresa.
OverDrive Lending Models
Here's a quick guide to the different lending models in Marketplace:
- OC/OU = Permanently added to the collection
- MA = Metered time or check out limits
Below, you will see graphics of the various formats available for e-books, audio books and video. Please note that while you are welcome to select any type of media for the shared collection, all e-books that you add to your cart must have the OverDrive Read format listed and all audio books must have the OverDrive Listen format listed in order to ensure compatiblity for users across the districts.
This sounds great, but.......
