George Southard's Family News

April & May 2022

FROM PRINCIPAL SCHMITT

Welcome Back! This is the final stretch of the school year and everyone is working hard to stay healthy and to ensure students meet grade level standards by June. Please continue to read, write, practice math facts, and have some fun with your children at home. This extra support helps so much as we continue to strive for academic excellence and meet our goals.

UPDATES and REMINDERS

NYS Assessments: The NYS Math Assessment for students in third and fourth grade will take place on Tuesday, April 26th and Wednesday, April 27th. Our students rocked the NYS ELA Assessment and will do the same for Math.

Report Cards: Friday, 4/8 marked the end of the third quarter. Report cards will be available to view on the Parent Portal on Thursday, 4/21. A hard copy will also be sent home in your child's take-home folder on 4/21. Please look out for these and review with your child. As always, reach out to your child's teacher with any questions or concerns.

Recess: Students will continue to go outside for recess each day unless it is raining. Please be sure your children are dressed accordingly.

Other Important Dates:

GS Musical: 4/29 @ 6:30pm @ LHS

Spring Band and Chorus Concert: 5/25 @ 6:30pm @ LHS

Memorial Day: 5/27 & 5/30- NO SCHOOL

Lunch Monitors Needed: We are in need of lunch monitors to work the lunch hours of 11:15-1:45 daily. Please reach out to Ms. Schmitt if interested.

BREAKFAST AND LUNCH

Breakfast: Students are encouraged to eat breakfast at home prior to coming to school; however, breakfast is now available for students to consume at school. Breakfast bags will no longer be sent home. The cafeteria opens at 8:45 for breakfast. Parents/guardians can escort students to Door 2 starting at 8:45am through 9:10am. After 9:10am, parents/guardians are not permitted in the bus loop. Bussers who would like breakfast will report directly to the cafeteria upon arrival.

Lunch: All lunch choices are the same (main lunch, salad, sandwich, chicken nuggets, and peanut butter & jelly). Students now go through the lunch lines instead of receiving a prepared meal. Students are encouraged to eat their fruits and vegetables!

Adventure Away!

The George Southard Fourth Grade Musical, "Adventure Away," will take place on Friday, April 29th. "Adventure Away" is a musical adventure that explores all the different ways students can enjoy vacation!

  • All students and staff will travel to LHS at 9:30am to watch the performance. Please be sure to return the Field Trip permission slip to your child's teacher by 4/28.
  • The evening performance for friends and family will take place at 6:30pm at LHS. Tickets are $5 and available at the door or pre-sale: llucernoni@lockportschools.net.

Teacher Appreciation

Teacher Appreciation Week takes place from May 2-6. The GS teachers and staff have gone above and beyond for our students making their elementary experience so wonderful. Consider showing your appreciation through kind words, messages, drawings, or other means.

The entire George Southard faculty and staff would like to thank the PTA for the generous lunch on Friday, 4/8 to show their appreciation.
