The Manning Weekly Newsletter
May 14, 2021
Manning Community,
This week has been busy as always, but with that level of crazy, I find comfort. Comfort in the fact that our school, our children, our family are all here, working and learning. And for that, I cannot be more grateful. That is what we are all here for...because we believe in education.
Please join me for our last parent partnership meeting of the year, as I'm merging our parent partnership with our final town hall meeting, so all are welcome! This Tuesday evening, we will be reflecting on the year, and I will give a glimpse of next year and the exciting plans we have for our community in 2021-2022.
This edition of the newsletter is full of information, so grab a cup of coffee, sit back and enjoy!
Stronger Together,
Christian Ramaker

They should not have any stickers on the CB, if they do, please remove all stickers prior May 26. Fines may occur if the device is permanently damaged or altered.
Any student not returning to Manning in the fall, they will be turning in their CB at the end of the day. Be sure they bring their CB and charger. Tagging their name on both and wrapping up the charger with the Velcro, will help speed up the turn in process.

Here is a little story for you this week:
May is the time of Mother’s Day and Mental Health Awareness Month. For my mother and father and I, these are inextricably linked. My mother was salutatorian of her Iowa high school class and a cheerleader. She loved going to all the dances in the neighboring towns. She excelled at school and had a college scholarship, which went unused.
My mother has courageously lived with schizophrenia since her twenties. In 1960, at the age of 27, she was taken by the Jones County deputy sheriff to the Iowa State Mental Hospital in Independence, Iowa. The hospital is still in operation, and I toured it in 2017. The room where shock treatment was done has remained untouched since the 1960s. One floor of the building is a museum dedicated to the hospital’s long history.
Despite her illness, my mother worked as a bookkeeper. She and my father married and both worked for Collins Radio when I was born. Dad worked the day shift and mom worked the night shift and then tried to stay awake with me while dad was at work.
When I was eight years old, I watched the Linn County sheriff put her in the car to take her to the hospital psych ward. This is how many in our country, then and now, are forced to deal with mental illness.
The side effects from the medication that my mother has been on for over 50 years cause heartaches and embarrassments of their own, not to mention permanent effects similar to those of Parkinson’s Disease. The stigma of mental illness has isolated those struggling with it and their families for far too long. This is why I share our story.
A friend who worked in counseling once told me that my mother is lucky. She has had some semblance of a normal life. Her strength of will, determination and immense love have allowed her to raise a daughter and live 88 years so far.
On Mother’s Day, I picked her up at the care center to bring her to our house for brunch. She had a worried look on her face, “I have lost my mind. I am so glad you came to get me. I didn’t know how I was going to get home.” She still managed to comb her hair and tottered over to her closet to hang up her nightgown. But her smile was weak.
Watching her sliding into dementia in addition to her schizophrenia is almost too much to bear. But she looks me in the eyes and says, “I love you.” Which she repeats again a half hour later. And again. And again.

Student Shout Out for HONESTY
- Kane Menzor for always asking for what he needs and letting us know when he forgot something at home. It is very brave to tell an adult when you forgot your stuff, but you advocate for yourself and make sure you get the things you need to be successful!
Student Shout Out for EFFORT
- Maya Voisey for being brave and returning for in-person classes the rest of the year! It is a hard transition and we appreicate you making the effort to finish the year strong!
- Myla Sonoqui for making every effort to stay connected to your group in theater. It can't be easy to be the only remote kiddo in the group, but you always try to stay involved from home!
Student Shout Out for ACHIEVEMENT
- Sohpie Perlin for getting to class on time several times this week!
Student Shout Out for RESPECT
- Ryan Mauro for being respectful when speaking to adults in the office. We appreciate it!
Student Shout Out for TEAMWORK
- Ava Wood for looking out for a friend who was making up a MAP test in the office. Thank you for bringing her stuff to the office when she didn't return to class!
