Deforestation

Up to 28,000 species are expected to completely become extinct within the next quarter of the century if the rate of deforestation continues.

Deforestation is a one of the main threats to the species that live in the jungles, but it isn't the only threat. Poachers and wildlife smugglers are easily other threats to these animals. Orangutans are found buried alive under ground and attacked by machetes. Over the last twenty years, roughly over 50,000 orangutans have died from deforestation. Ninety percent of orangutan habitat has been destroyed.

Deforestation and Drought by Jim Robbins

In this New York Times Article titled "Deforestation and Drought," Jim portrays how deforestation, in the Amazon Rain Forest in particular, is contributing to drought in North America, specifically California, New Mexico, and Texas. While we think of drought as a natural disaster, the cause is pointing more towards the humans rather than mother nature. Cutting down forests contributes to the release of stored carbon dioxide, which traps in heat and leads to the heating of the atmosphere. Within the last year 2,000 square miles of the Amazon have been chopped away, mostly for soy expansion and cattle farming. Jim explains how a variety of different scientists are trying to address the issue and nurse the Amazon back to its original health.

During the past two decades, we have became more aware of the issue of deforestation. This chart calculates the annual square kilometers of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon.

Forests cover over 30% of earth's land, but in an estimated of 100 years, there will be no more rainforests. Agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, with lessens the natural remedies in the rain forest which can be used as medicines.

How To Help Preserve Forests?

What Can This Lead To?

There are many effects of deforestation, soil erosion, floods, wildlife extinction, increase in global warming, and climate imbalance being a few. Global Warming is one of the main effects of deforestation. There are two main effects of deforestation on global warming, the first being the "slash and burn" technique which is used to clear forests, leading to the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The second effect is the destruction of trees which reduces the amount of photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide is the major gas that contributes in global warming. This will lead to a rise in earth's temperature making the overall climate of the Earth to change permanently.
